rebuild carburetor need advice

I'm going to attempt to rebuild my rochester single barrel carburetor.
Currently runs good. Leaks fuel on linkage from throttle to slide Bottom of carb. I assume this slide (up and down movement) opens fuel fan blade.
Is this common problem? Is there o ring the slide inside of carb?
Any specific brand of rebuild kit you all recommend.

Thanks for any tips or advice

Re: rebuild carburetor need advice

I'd just get a kit through Napa No O ring on the shaft but gas is probably dribbling down the inside from the float bowl and getting on the shaft and getting out. Shaft or the hole the shaft run through may be worn more than desired though.

Take a look here on the model of it but I think it is a BC with a hot air choke. http://www.carburetor-parts.com/Roch...ors_c_649.html

It's about 20 bucks but you can buy a gallon size can of carb cleaner with a little dip basket in it at the parts house that makes cleaning one a lot easier.

Re: rebuild carburetor need advice

Not a carb expert, but I do remember a thread a while ago with similar problem. Consensus was float adjustment or dirty needle valve was probably the cause, not worn shaft. Even on a new carb during operation the shaft is not an absolute seal and not enough liquid gas goes thru the carb to leak there, especially when you remember air movement around the shaft is a vacuum towards the throat, not pressure. I don't have time to find it, but do a search for threads related to Schrum, he was having carb issues.

He bought a new Zenith carb, did not want to mess with trying to fix the one he had. Note, his is a GMC so Zenith is the correct carb for his engine. Zenith, Rochester or Carter will all work assuming you get the right brackets for the choke, manual throttle and throttle.

Re: rebuild carburetor need advice

Leaking gas around the shaft is a sign of too much gas getting in and on the throttle plate/shaft. If it was real sloppy the problem would be that you couldn't get the idle mixture set right or the plate would bind/stick in the throttle bore. Float adjustment, needle valve not sealing, leaking float or stuck power valve are some things that might be the cause.

They aren't hard to rebuild. You just want to get all the passages really clean and not get heavy handed taking it apart or putting it together and don't skip over an adjustment as you go. I used to have a lot of carbs brought to me that weren't working right after someone had rebuilt them that either had damaged parts from rough handling or had not been set right when they were put back together.

Mikes carburetor parts does some great youtube videos on these carbs. Well worth spending the time to watch them here is the one on a B or BC carb flooding or having issues like you have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJb9zEutiHc

For soaking carb parts overnight, you should really try
ruby grapefruit juice.

About $6 worth did my Edelbrock 4-barrel and a Honda 50 Mini Trail carb, too.

Rinse with water and apply moderate air pressure to passages.

When finished with it, just pour it in the wife's flower bed.

Re: rebuild carburetor need advice

I just finished the carb rebuild on my 51, same carb but with a manual choke. I had the same problem, it was both dirt in the needle seat and old floats, I bought the kit from NAPA and a new float the kits do not come with floats, I think both were $19, soak the carb in cleaner works best, the spray is not as complete of a clean and inspect the parts after, I actually spray them off with carb cleaner and follow up with my air hose. Make sure you completly take the carb all the way down, there are not that many parts and take a few pictures just as a guide to reassemble. The small ball bearings are different sizes, just pay attention to that, its the only real chance of a problem, this is the simplest carb and they work great when rebuilt. You should have no problem doing it in a few hours at the most.

Scotts 72.
The needle seat. Is that needle that floats will push up to turn fuel supply off.
Do you remember part # for kit and floats?

Re: rebuild carburetor need advice

Mono nets are cheap and easy to find. For twice the price of a kit you can get a good running mono jet can be had right off a running truck that will bolt directly on and need little to no tuning.

I have had bran new carbs leak fuel as you described from a intake gasket being ripped. Before you do anything replace the gasket and use some red intake rtv. The rtv helps seal if the base is not square which is a common problem.

Re: rebuild carburetor need advice

Just update. I ended up ordering a kit from mikes carburetor.
I cleaned everything. Replaced floats. Replace accerlator pump. Replace fuel jet and seat. ( new jet port alot smaller and new seat smaller). Replaced gaskets.

Bolted up. Put fuel in carb. Crank got fuel line prime. Truck runs. Had to barley touch throttle to keep truck from dieing. Adjusted throttle screw 1/2 turn. Every thing runs idles great. Good throttle response. No leaks.

Kit around $40 shipped. A lot better than having to buy a whole carb. This was my first time. A lot easier than i thought it would be. I appreciate all the tips and advice.

good for you man. If you DIY at least you know what was done. ANd, the other guys are right, this is a really simple carb. About as simple as carbs get.
