60-66 Pickup Conceptual Design (GM)
As an architect, I find automotive design interesting.
Does anybody have any information or images regarding prototypes and design studies relating to the 60-66 pickup? I've always thought that you could find similar design characteristics in the early 60's Corvairs and the 62-67 Corvettes. The interiors especially. Each has crisp lines running the length of the body and dual cockpit interiors. Were these models designed by the same studio? I am particularly interested in the reasoning why GM never gave the 60-66 its own stepside bed and If they had a unique bed, what would it look like? I'm sure it was cost. Other design curiosities that I have are what would a 60-63 AC dash look like?

Re: 60-66 Pickup Conceptual Design (GM)
I've not come across any literature dealing with the design aspects of the 60-66trucks. I read somewhere a long time ago that John DeLorean had worked on the design but have no proof of this statement.
Dodge ran their stepside fenders from something like 53- 85. Ford 57-72 Chev/GMC 55-66 Perhaps you already know 60-63 had an under dash A/C unit.

Re: 60-66 Pickup Conceptual Design (GM)
I have been looking for years for the same thing. The only picture I was able to find is the one attached. Would love to see a full size picture of this truck and its full trim package. Found the pic a few years ago and was labeled as a prototype, but haven't been able to find any more pics. The search continues.

Re: 60-66 Pickup Conceptual Design (GM)
I was aware of the under dash model. I may try to draw up some schematics for a on dash model similar to the 64-66. I know that another poster has created molds for the in dash type. It might be interesting to modify it for the 60-63.
I've always been fascinated with that GMC picture. I would like to know more if possible. That is a great thread. I remember seeing it awhile back. Thanks.

Re: 60-66 Pickup Conceptual Design (GM)
Here is a conceptual rendering for the 1963 trucks. Don't know what year this was done, but I found it on the net somewhere.
Study it closely and you will see some things that are different from the production version.

That picture of the 63 is from the 1963 Chevy truck engineer features book. I have a copy of it....pic is just 2-3 pages into it.

Re: 60-66 Pickup Conceptual Design (GM)
In addition to the new rear step side fenders that should have come with the 1960 models, I was always disappointed they never came up with a transitional hood for the 1962 model either. My concept would have been to keep the original drop center blended with the smooth corners from the later hood. This is a crude photo chop using my truck and a 1959 Oldsmobile hood in the center. Unfortunately I don't have the skills to pull it off in metal, but I may do it in fiberglass someday:
I would imagine by this time at GM all the designers were already working on the 67 models and had little interest in making additional improvements on the old trucks.

Re: 60-66 Pickup Conceptual Design (GM)
I have seen a story somewhere saying that a designer came up with a refresh for 67 and beyond but it was killed out of fear that they wouldnt get another truck for awhile. Does anybody have anymore info (or pics) on this refresh?

Re: 60-66 Pickup Conceptual Design (GM)
Bgbchevy, here's something you may find interesting.
The 1967 chevy truck brochures had all the pictures of trucks were drawings, while before and after were actual photographs of trucks. Wierd. http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/brochure...page=2&scan=22 |
