Would a 73-79 front clip work on a 1981 gmc k10?
Or would it be better to do the 88-91 clip?

Depends on your preference. I love both looks over the 81. Both will fit if it is complete from clip including fenders, inner fenders, hood, rad support, etc...

All personal preference. I love every year of the square body. I prefer the 81-91 sheet metal the most especially with the 89-91 grille and dual headlights. Second being the 1980 GMC/Chevy square headlight front clip. But yes, it will all bolt up either way you want it.

to answer your question yes it will fit very well, only thing is the wiper pivots will need to be changed because the arlier hood has the wiper below it and no cowl panel the newer has a cowl panel. If you want to do the later model on the earlier model cab then the hood springs and hinges are a problem.
