6.2 timing

ok so i still have not got my 6.2 running knock free. now i have been told that the gear for the pump CAN NOT jump a tooth with the pump not inand then i have been told that it can. does any one have any real world info on if this is posible either way?

The only way it's possible to skip a tooth is if you take off the timing gear cover. Otherwise it's impossible. Timing for a 6.2 can only be done with specific diesel timing guns. There are guys over on Oilburners.net that rent timing meters or will time your engine for you.

I'm not a member on oilburners.net but there are a bunch of 6.2 lovers at dieselplace.com. So far, any trouble with mine has been solved with their help. I put a rebuilt injection pump on mine from badger diesel recently with their guidance with good result.

No way for it to jump gears (i.e. Jump timing) without removing the timing gear housing. None at all. So unless you are replacing your injection pump by taking the whole housing off instead of just taking the pump out by removing the 3 bolts that hold it to the gear and sliding it back towards the firewall... Then you have other issues to deal with. But if you are removing the pump the right way, then your timing gear cannot jump teeth.

Diesel place is a very good site for 6.2 help. OB.net really isn't good for advice or help on anything other than the ford/international 6.9/7.3.

new pump as original was leaking. got it in fired it up knocks tried bleeding tried to get it to one hole tried new injectors tried 3 diff ones in all holes then replaced all still knocks with no change in sound

Are you sure you have the injector lines in the right place on the back of the injection pump? Where are you sitting as far as initial timing on the new pump? Where did this new pump come from?

i have taken the lines off one by one no change in knock have also checked the order of the lines. timing is just the mark in pump and on block lined up mp to see if it changes. no change other then it will run like crap or smoth out but still no change in knock. pump came from napa

is there any way that this pump is the wrong one to the motor? thought they where all the same for the 6.2. meaning you could take a 82 and put it in a 92 and it should run just fine

All the DB2 pumps will work on a 6.2. Even a 6.5 pump will work on a 6.2 as long as it's still mechanical and not a PMD pump. Have you worked all the air out of the injectors? As in, how long have you driven it or had it running to work out all the air? Can you reinstall your old pump to see if the problem is engine related or fuel related? And you can try rotating the injection pump to change the timing to see if it's an ignition knock.

sadly the old pump went in for a core so thats out
i have let it run prob around and hour or so. i have also cracked the lines to help with air
i have turned the pump runs rough one way smooth the other too a point knock still there

If they are taking cores then they are selling rebuilds using old bodies. Not a good ide. The best rebuilders don't do that. For all the trouble you are going through I would pull it and use that Napa warranty.

Depends on what they're actually doing when they rebuild it. If it's just replacing seals, I agree with you. But if they do it the rift way and bore out the cylinder and put a brand new plunger in it, then rebuilds are better than brand new. Most rebuilders don't do that though because it costs too much.

I usually just go for a drive once the engine is running well enough to actually drive the truck.
