Hybrid power steering pump pressure hose

I need to replace the hoses on my previously installed (and somewhat grubby) power steering setup. I don't know where the P.O. sourced this setup, but the pump end of the fitting has an o-ring while the steering box end is an inverted flare. I've been searching for a hose like this, but everything I'm finding is either o-ring or inverted flare, but not both.

What is going to be my path of least resistance, and adapter on the pump, and adapter on the steering box, or a replacement fitting in the pump?

Any suggestions?

You could go to NAPA and have it made. Or a tractor shop if your in a rural area.

I am also considering that option.

You will have to either have a hose made, or just change the pressure fitting on the back of the pump. If you choose to change the fitting, be careful, there is a spring behind the fitting.

I had a similar problem. I found a similar hose at O'Reilys. It had a female fitting on one end whereas my original uses male fittings on both ends, so I cut off the end with the female fitting, put on the male fitting from the old, and simply re-flared the tubing. I didn't notice mine using any o-rings.

I just came back from a shop that makes hydraulic hoses and they quoted me $125 to make up the one hose. Since I can get a hose with flares on both ends from Rock Auto for under $20, I'm going to eliminate the custom hose option. The ironic thing is the first thing I did with my new pump is swap the pressure fitting with the pressure fitting from my old pump, which is when I discovered that they were actually identical.

While I suppose there is probably an adapter to go from the o-ring fitting to a flare, fewer things like that means fewer things to leak. I'm going to my local parts store today to see if they can even get me a pressure fitting with a flare.

I may take you up on that. I don't think I'll be able to source one from a parts store locally, and my schedule doesn't afford me much time to rummage around salvage yards.

You can put -AN adapters on each and make a custom hose with -AN fitting ends for way less than $125. This is how I have done all of my hydroboost setups.

The early pumps (pre-1987) used the inverted flare fitting. In 1987, GM went to the o-ring style. They make o-ring to inverted flare adapters (Russell), but I'm not real crazy about them because now you have two areas to seal (the o-ring side and the inverted flare side).

You have a couple of options:
1): Replace you o-ring pump with an inverted flare pump and run an inverted flare hose.

2): Keep your current set-up, run an adapter, and have the shop make you an "combo" hose. Note: The adapter moves the hose slightly away from the pump, and it gets really tight against the side of the block and the pressure hose.

3): Swap out the o-ring fitting on the back of the pump with an inverted flare style. I have heard that these will swap out, but I have never tried it.

$125 for a single custom hose is a rip off. I recently did custom hoses for my '64, and the fittings (total of three) cost me $12ea and the hose was $4 a foot. They charged me $2ea for each crimp. The total cost of both my pressure and return hoses was $66. Are there any other hydraulic hose shops in town? Most NAPA stores make custom hoses as well.

as the Captain said just take the pressure fitting from the back of the pump and put in one from an earlier pump. just remember the spring that goes with it. then just run a stock hose.
it is that simple.
