Finally up and running

I finally got the '86 going. Took it Tuesday and had it tuned and dynoed. I put about 50 miles on it yesterday and it feels great. There are defiantly some things I would do differently if I do another truck like this, but overall I'm very happy with the truck. I was shooting for roughly 400 WHP and it made 373.88hp and 353tq. The only issue we're still having is sometimes it will idle down too far and have a hard time catching itself without stalling when coming to a hard stop or in stop and go traffic. Hopefully we'll get that worked out here in the next week or so. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone here. The knowledge and willingness to help is awesome. Now it's time to drive the heck out of it and enjoy it. Today is my youngest son's 10th birthday and he told me it was the best gift ever, getting to ride to school this morning in it. Makes all the hard work and money worth it.

When you have time..Maybe you could talk about what you would have done differently.

The only thing I really regret, or wish i would have done differently, is using the Dirty Dingo motor mounts. I would have used the Tejas motor mounts to be able to use the a/c in the stock location. I would not do the cam swap and saved the money I had to spend on the cam, springs, push rods, lifters, and stall converter(roughly 2K). I probably would not swap to the 243/799 heads either. I would just do more of a nice reliable, comfortable, stock cruiser and not worry about the go fast parts.

I also am using the Dirty Dingo mounts..There is no way to get the A/C in the stock location with these mounts?

Not that I'm aware of. I have the motor slide back a little more than stock and when I held the compressor up just to see if it would possibly fit, the DD mount was in the way. I'm not sure if the motor would slide forward enough for it fit or not. By the time I found the Tejas Steelworks mounts, I was far enough along that I didn't want to go back and redo it to make them work.

No NSS and idle is about 750. I know the NSS may be playing a part in it and have been told that the bigger cams may also play a part. The cam is a 231/235 .632lift
I'm going to look at the NSS again and try to put one in and see if it helps when I get time or feel like messing with it. We did play with the idle for a while and it didn't help much at all.

Your idle is set too low for that cam in general. (whats your lsa?). NSS will help it bump the rpms' a little and help "catch" the idle, but it should still be set higher.

Big cam cars, especially on a low lsa's need to be running anywhere from 850-1k RPM. The big cam and low idle can create an extremely low air mass in the cylinders and have a tendency to stumble around a bit; meaning that when you come into DFCO or have a load on the engine from the converter/ac/ps, it doesn't have a large enough window to catch the idle before its too low and wants to stall.

Re: Finally up and running

LSA is 111. Seems like we ran the idle up to about 850 maybe just a bit more, but was still having problems with it stalling. My tuner is going to come out not this weekend but next and try to get it straightened out. We'll bump the idle up to 900-1000 and see what that does.

Re: Finally up and running

Sounds like a nice ride. Any pics of the install and idle clips?

Thanks, I didn't take very many photos along the way. I have a few that I'll see about getting up when I get a chance.
