Rear axle code?
I went to pick up my donor crossmember from a guy today and mentioned it was going in a 62 GMC and he asked if I had a rearend for it yet. I said no because its got kind of an obsolete Eaton rearend so I was looking. He said I have a coil spring 12 bolt out of a 65, we looked at it and he gave me a good price so I loaded it up too...Great day!
On to the question, I cleaned the axle tube a little and found the stamping HA 315 W, which according to the ID chart http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=327764 is a 3:73, but in parenthesis it says (exc. positraction). The drums are frozen so I cant spin it yet, but does this mean it could be posi with this code, and therefore a different gear? It seems to me if it was posi it would have a different code stamped. If this is the case what does the exception mean? Anybody have some insight? Thanks, Jeremy |

Re: Rear axle code?
The way I read it is that you have a 3.73 open diff. 3.73 posi would have HC or HG.

Re: Rear axle code?
Yes, I think you're right. I think I was trying to think about it too hard. So the chart is saying this code is for a 3:73 gear, but if you have a posi and 3:73 you should see a different code. I was trying to will it to be posi carrier, oh well, at least I've got the right housing and axles to work with...
Thanks! |

Re: Rear axle code?
I could be wrong about this, but I think most off the 12 bolts, at least up to 72 have the stamp on the axle tube below the mounting bracket for the brake line block towards the front side of the axle. Mine was barely visible, but I took a wire brush over it and I could read it plain as day
