Bags on a 64
Hey folks I finally got a correct frame for my truck. Now I've got to figure out how or where to put the bags for the rear. The frame design has me a little concerned I won't be able to get the results I want. I want a comfortable ride height but when parked I want the rockers on the ground. Is this possible without breaking the bank. Money is an issue. So I need yalls best ideas. Thanks.

If you plan to put the rockers on the ground you will need a good bit of fab skills and and a chunk of change. You can pancake the front crossmember and notch the frame in the front to get it down. The You can flip the trailing arm brackets and build your own notch for the back. That will get you close. You may have to raise the floor in the cab to make room for the trans as the engine may have to go up as you raise the cross member. You will need to raise the bed floor. Staying with the 15" wheels with a 225 70 tire will help get you down verses a tall wheel and tire combo. Both the projects section and the suspension section have more info on this task.

Sometimes the cheapest way is not the best way. Z-ing the frame is for good fab/weld type. I started with rear bags on Schrader valves. Notching the frame and major work to front to get it down. The nose is typically 3 to four inches off ground with inner fenders.

My thoughts were I could notch the rear and the front would be fine. I've never done anything lie this before and wasn't able to find good info with pics to see how it should be done correctly.

What happens in the front is the cross member and the lower a arm cross shafts land pretty quickly. If you roll under your truck and measure from the cross member to the ground, the rockers to the ground and the frame at the same place you measure the rockers you will get a feel for the differances. That's where porterbuilts drop members come in. If you go look at there stuff and take a look at the way they bring the suspension up you will see what it takes to get the rockers on the ground.

Thanks. I think for now I'm gonna replace the springs with bags for the better ride then in the future I may decide to go all the way with this.

You may want to do some reading on bags. They dont always give a better ride. I have one on air and one on springs and will see how the air truck does when done. With the drop springs and good shocks the ride is pretty good. I drive mine every day.

Ride quality comes from optimum bag selection for each specific application. What rides great on one truck (say one utilizes drop spindles vs another that doesn't) may not work as well on another.

You need to know the dimensions of the bags you're looking at & how much room you have to work with on your ride.
