Truck dies when in gear
Okay I have a 68 stepside with a 350 with a mild cam and a 700r4. My problem is when I put it in gear (drive or reverse) and try to accelerate it dies, but when it's in park or neutral it revs up perfectly fine and everything. but when I shift it into reverse or drive it'll idle perfectly fine, however as soon as I attempt to accelerate it turns off.
Anyone know what could be causing it? |

Re: Truck dies when in gear
Lack of initial timing and/or inadequate accelerator pump shot.

Re: Truck dies when in gear
I second that! Make sure your timing is dialed in. Also what carb? What does it idle at in park?

Re: Truck dies when in gear
I remember my dad's chevelle doing the same thing. I asked my dad about it because he messes with 700r4's and his chevelle was doing the same thing. He said the guy who built the transmission had something backwards in the transmission. He isn't sure what it was but the guy swapped around and it run fine ever since.

Re: Truck dies when in gear
if your converter is bad that will cause it to die

Lock-up torque converter not disengaging?

Re: Truck dies when in gear
If you suspect the tranny or lockup just 'hot brake' it!
Bring the rpm's up slightly (about 1000 rpm) with your foot on the brake and slip it into gear. Feather the throttle with the brake on to keep it running. Then slowly decrease the rpm so it will idle in gear. If it keeps running it's not tranny related. If it dies it's timing related. |
