how to check tie rod for wear ?
I had to replace upper ball joint and thought I might as well check tie rod joints as well. The front still is apart so no tire on to check it that way so I was wondering how else to check for wear on the tie rod

Re: how to check tie rod for wear ?
IMO its gonna be impossible to check with no tire on vehicle. If it was me and I already had them apart I would just go ahead and replace. Especially if the boots look semi busted/rotten.

Jack it up and grab the wheel. Make sure the steering wheel is locked and rock the wheel back and forth (as if the truck was turning left and right). Feel for any play and have someone watch the tie rod ends for movement.

Re: how to check tie rod for wear ?
A dry park inspection is the best/proper way. With the weight on the front tires have someone "bounce" the steering wheel back and forth in short movements. Watch for any movement laterally at the tie rod ends. Also push up and down with hand pressure only (15lbs.) to detect movement. Any movement not tracking with the steering arms equals replacement.
The problem with jacking the front end up and doing the 3-9 wiggle is you feel the play that is standard on the GM idler arm. There is an allowable tolerance in the idlers, around .060-.0120" measured by dial indicator if memory serves correct.
