Shift rods are too short? 3ott swap
I swapped my 3ott tranny in my 68 GMC LB Fleet, and while I knew I'd need to make drive shaft adjustment...the shift rods come up short. Any ideas here? I thought they would be approximately same size since shift plate is in same place, but guess I'm wrong. Any ideas about what rods to look for? Are those adjustable ones in the catalogs worth a look? Looking in Classifieds here I'd need to know exactly what will work and I'm not as knowledgable as most of y'all. I'm not worried about originality, I need drive ability. Ideas, suggestions greatly appreciated.

Re: Shift rods are too short? 3ott swap
250, 2wheel drive, straight 6 cyl. original, not swapped. I'm just wondering if Muncie and Saginaw had different shift rods. I've probably got some around here, but I've got to find them. Spedo cable is also 4" too short to fit, although I've not looked for any slack up the line there.
Would pics help? let me know, I appreciate the help very much. I'm still learning trucks..... Last edited by CousinTone; 07-08-2016 at 06:20 PM. |

I'm bettin' the rods are different on the two. Yes, you would have to change the speedo cable the output is further back on the 3ott trans. LockDoc

Re: Shift rods are too short? 3ott swap
Being new, I went back to some old pics. Original was Muncie and one I was donated was Saginaw. I vaguely remembered the guy giving me some extra parts just to be nice. Turns out I found those parts and the rods are a bit different and I think once I get those mounts on the tranny, the donated rods are the trick. I'll need update the speedo cable for the Saginaw, hopefully longer, and she'll move under her own power for the first time in over 15 months. My wife will ne more excited than me since I parked it in the middle of the driveway to start the work.
Thank you all for your input, it was the final push to get me finished. Much thanks! |

Re: Shift rods are too short? 3ott swap
Yhea the rods are different as you found out not only shorter but have different bends.
Oviously the shift leavers on the trans are different too. I found this out when setting up my 4ott. I pulled a bunch of levers and rods out of the jy to get everything too work right. Most pieces i used were from a sag 3 spd since they are almost the same as the 4spd. I had to use a variety of levers so i didnt get any binding. I don't think I was able too use anything from the Muncie 3spd.

I wonder if someone pushed the steering wheel closer to the dash for more room in the cab after I did that to mine the rods were too short
