Starter wiring

My truck is finally running but we still have few problems one that is driving me crazy hahaha. Sometimes it starts and then another time you will shut it off and it won't start you just hear a click from the solenoid. The solenoid isn't pushing into the flex plate. when it is clicking If you run a wire from the battery to the solenoid it will start the truck just fine. Everything is bran new, battery, alternator is 100 amp , new regulator from summit racing , new ignition switch after market. The wire from the ignition goes straight to the solenoid am I missing something should there be a relay. I have a 1966 c10 with a 283.

Thanks for the help
Rocky

Re: Starter wiring

TRY another solenoid (new) sounds like it is drawing to many amps in start mode.... When you say a wire from battery to solenoid it starts. You are talking about a wire to the "S" terminal? If YES what you then have is a shorter wire with NO connections (points of resistance) and maybe a lager/heavier one than you have from ING. switch which will over come the amp draw or voltage drop through the OEM wiring which was barely big enough when NEW ... I have had to install a relay near delco type starters before to over come this problem works great after that

Re: Starter wiring

Get a meter and measure the voltage to the block when the key's in the start position. Measure the battery voltage. The big negative cable should run to the block.
