Factory correct fan

Can someone help me with the factory correct fan setup for a 66 with a 283 in it? How many blades? What does it look like? How big is the spacer? My truck is missing it completely. What about the shroud?

Re: Factory correct fan

I assume its a chevy and not a GMC. You can buy a after market replacement fan shroud as far as the fan goes you will have to measure the opening in the shroud as GM used a bunch of different size fan blades and for the spacer will depend on whether you have short water pump or a long water pump.Name: IMG_2255.JPG

Re: Factory correct fan

The pics DPowers posted show the correct original fan and shroud.

All trucks '72 and earlier originally came with short water pumps.

Re: Factory correct fan

I know on my 305 V-6 engines, the early models came with a smallish 4 blade fan. When I upgraded to P/S I went on the hunt for a 2 or 3 groove pulley setup and that came with a 6 bladed fan which is strange as the position of the blades not spaced evenly, but it is balanced.

TRY that with a ceiling fan........

Fans with more than four blades are usually (I won't say "always," because someone will find one) unevenly spaced like that. It keeps the air from "cavitating." With them unevenly spaced, it always gets a "bite" of air.

What year is that engine? Did they have 4 or 5 blade fans from 64-66? Also sidenote, is that a 4 barrel oil bath?

It is a 65 283 powerglide motor, code WE, that is a 2 barrel oil bath air cleaner, do you need one. I believe it maybe the HD fan with the big radiator and shroud if ordered.

Except if you ordered the factory air option or HD radiator and it was this 5 blade fan, also you could have ordered a clutch fan in 65-66 also.

Good to know, more cooling the better. Were the clutch fans a commonly used part on Chevy vehicles in that era? Or specific to the c10's?

They were very uncommon on C10's and are hard to find, the clutch is unique to the trucks.

Re: Factory correct fan

Thanks for the info LT1, Brad and McGee... I always wondered why the fan blades were uneven. LT1, thanks anyways but I'm considering running an oil bath on my quadrajet if I can find one for a 4 barrel

Re: Factory correct fan

I noticed on my 62 Shroud that a 19" could easily fit, but on my 65 Shroud, it looks like a maximum of 18".

Re: Factory correct fan

Thats why when i was doing so much junking from 1993 until 2009.When i ran a pond fans with fan clutch.Ford dodge chevy anything i saved it.It was a pet peeve of mine so was exhaust manifolds for big block and small black car's and trucks. Most people go to electric fans.I rather have the 16-17 inch fans. You know thew Caddys Had the fan clutch but used the 15 inch fan for some of there car's.So i know what you mean I have a Ford 7 blade fan on my 1965 3/4 ton 350 / auto Power glide
