Computer in an 83?

I was just remembering back when I had the dash apart in my 83... I could swear I saw a computer under there... What was it doing there? My car is not emissions controlled or fuel injected, so surely I dont need it? Should I yank it, Yay or nay?

I would just leave it there, why go to the trouble of tearing it out if it doesn't do anything? My 85 has a electric box of some sort behind the glovebox, not sure what its for, I didn't think mine had a computer but I don't know what it originally had on it.

that box goes to the esc or the electronic spark control

I didnt think it had one. Its just got an HEI with a couple wires coming out. Is it similar to an MSD ignition box?

not only Cali trucks got ESC. my buddy Norm had an 82 with ESC. ditch the crap and run a regular HEI. eliminating it also cleans up the engine bay considerably.

As a side note, all LE9 305 trucks came with the ESC module. It's not a computer, only controlls spark knock by retarding the timing when needed.

That must be what I have. The knock sensor and distributor both have wires leading to the box.

I wont need it on my new motor will I?

No, you don't need it. Just replace the distributor and go.
