Installing steering gear box
Ok I picked up from a junkyard a 1990 c1500 gear box for my 1964 chassis with a 85 suburban front-end. On the c1500 it was located on the inside of the chassis but on my chassis it's too big to go on the inside due to the c channel. Is there any modifications that I need to do or am I mounting wrong. I was under the impression that a 1990 would work.

Re: Installing steering gear box
I always thought the cutoff year was 87' for the steering box unless you get it from a Suburban or a OBS Crew cab then it would be up to 91'.

Re: Installing steering gear box
Hopefully someone will chime in but I "think" they are the same as far as the box and pitman arm goes. I am fairly sure the tie rods are different but you're not using those. You might search on RockAuto and compare the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton part numbers for a steering box. That would help confirm the box. I am not as well versed on the total difference between the 1/2 and 3/4 ton items.

Re: Installing steering gear box
Ok I got a 91' suburban gear box today and tried to bolt up to 64' chassis. Is there a adapter plate so it rests flat ag ain't the frame? And can I use the same holes?

Re: Installing steering gear box
Yep, Captianfab's adapter is the only one I use. I have done two trucks with them. It will require drilling a few holes. It comes with a template which makes it really easy.
