Starter on 51 3600 with 61 235 troubles

Is it best to have the starter rebuilt or is there improved ones I could put on instead. Thanks

rebuilt is most likely all you'll get.

If the one you have worked good before I'd have it rebuilt or rebuild it. I don't know of any "improved" ones. About the only improving you could do is to put a heavy duty armature and fields on the end frame you have if it would even fit. I've swapped Delco starter parts around a lot but never have put anything but what came on it on one of those bolt to the bellhousing starters.

You do have to have the starter match the flywheels because stock 51 flywheels had a different ring gear tooth count than the 61 12 Volt starter's ring gear.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
