1972 Chevy Short Bed Driveshaft
Hi, would anyone know if a one piece driveshaft out a short bed 1973, with a turbo 350 trans (short tail shaft) would fit a 1972 with the same transmission?
Thanks Eddie |

Re: 1972 Chevy Short Bed Driveshaft
Honestly, with driveshaft lengths, I never trust anything but measuring yoke to yoke on the truck and driveshaft. I have gotten lucky and had shafts just work when doing swaps to measure and have one made longer or cut one shorter. It "should" work since frame length differences are all ahead of the cab, but does the engine sit more forward?
How does your truck sit now? Engine/trans in position and rear mounted? I'm waiting till I set engine/trans in the frame before thinking anything about a driveshaft on my shortbed. I'll do one piece, too.

What Tim said.
But more specifically, NO. The drivetrain is mounted in a different location, the wheelbase is different, (117.5 versus 115). And more importantly, is your truck lowered? A 1 piece shaft will not work with the 67-72 trailing arm crossmember (and it is in leaf spring trucks too) with stock height suspension.

Re: 1972 Chevy Short Bed Driveshaft
Wouldn't work in m y 69. At droop the driveshaft would have hit the crossmember. I guess a good example of not all trucks sit at same stock height.

Re: 1972 Chevy Short Bed Driveshaft
How close is the shaft to the cross member? A comfortable distance to allow for droop? Most times a 2wd rear doesn't do much drooping with compressing (from weight) being the main concern. Just curious how the clearance is. A assume the truck originally had a 2pc shaft, correct?
