LS and stock Tank

Does anyone have a parts list for what’s need to modify the stock tank in my 71 C10 to work with my 5.3? It’s either this or going the Wrangler tank route but I fell this may be easier and cheaper? Thoughts?

Re: LS and stock Tank

my 1st recommendation is to get the tank outta the cab...but that's a me thing..if you want to keep the stock tank you can use a walbro 255 inline pump with a vett filter/reg...you will need a return line on the tank...if your wanting the pump in the tank I'm not sure what you need..

Re: LS and stock Tank

Depending on how much you plan to drive the truck, the Wrangler tank may be the better way to go. Electric fuel pumps are designed to push fuel, not pull it, so having the pump in the tank is a far more reliable option. There will be people who say a frame mounted pump works fine for them, but then there will be a lot of people who say their frame mounted pump only lasted 5k miles or so. The problem it the pump isn't being cooled by being submerged in fuel like an in tank pump, then add to that its being asked to do a job it wasn't designed to do, suck the fuel up and out of the tank which is a good 2 1/2 feet before it gets to the pump. True, there is a syphoning effect once the fuel starts moving, but that still doesn't usually help in the long haul. I have a frame mounted Walbro255 on my truck, but I also have a sumped fuel tank, and the fuel comes out the bottom of the tank, directly into a pre-filter then into the pump. It's worked flawlessly for the last 33k miles, but it is a mess to try and clean the pre-filter which I have only done once, at about the 10k mile mark, and was shocked at the amount of trash that was in it, even after I had thoroughly cleaned the tank prior to putting any fuel in it. Just some food for thought....

Re: LS and stock Tank

I was thinking of having the feed line at the bottom of the tank and have the return fuel use the original feed hose at the top. What’s the best way to get the fuel fumes out of the tank before cutting and welding on it? Is it possible? Not sure if my donor engine is a return or return less fuel rail? It’s out of an 04 Yukon.

Re: LS and stock Tank

lots and lots of soap and water..a buddy of mine has converted several tanks...he uses soapy water to clean and then puts a nitrogen purge on the tank while welding...
either way the rails are on your engine if you go external pump you'll need a return fitting....if its a retrun rail you can cap it off with -an fittings if you use the vett filter/reg...the vett f-r will return to the tank..

Re: LS and stock Tank

I washed my tank out with dawn dish soap and a lot of water until it didnt smell like gas any more. If youre going to do it, do it at your own risk, because anything can happen and I dont want to be liable for it blowing up on you!

As for the lines, you can use the original feed line on the sender for the return, that's the way mine is run and it works perfectly. A 2004 engine could be either return or returnless. If its a return rail, just skip the expensive Corvette filter and just run a cheap EFI rated filter and run the return line back to the tank. The vacuum sourced fuel pressure regulator on the rail is actually better than the set regulator in the 'vette filter IMO. But if you do have a returnless then you will meed the Corvette filter, but dont skimp on a cheap one, get either a Wix or AC Delco, the cheap house brand filters at most auto parts stores are junk and I've seen many bad straight out of the box.

Re: LS and stock Tank

If relocating the tank is an option, I've seen guys use an '87 blazer tank and fuel sending unit. Because it's for a fuel injected vehicle, the tank has a built in pan and the fuel sending unit has a return. Keep in mind the stock in-tank fuel pump would have to be upgraded but it's a simple bolt in. There are a couple of guys running this set up with '96 5.7 vortec AC Delco fuel pumps with zero issues.

Does the 87 sender work with stock fuel gauge?

No problems at all. I just updated post with pic and added the pump, wasn't sure I still had it.

Re: LS and stock Tank

Does this sender and pump have an type fittings or what type? Any issues with the pump as far as pulling fuel up the sender and thru the pump rather than pushing? Wondered if a second pump was a good idea if fuel was being pulled from the tank rather than a gravity feed.
