I am not a fan of the chains so looking for tailgate latch ideas.

Mar-K hidden latch kit with their stainless link conversion.

Love the chains myself but you could do a budget latch set up with some 80's GM seatbelts. Cut the belts off and attach the male side to the tailgate and the female side to the bed.

I had tried a couple of different solutions before, including one from Pro's Picks, but the Mar-K kit was far and away the best engineered and quality. A couple of different shots of the components installed:

Works just as well on a step side. Mar-K is the only way to go.
