Stock Steelies

Im looking for a little help. I have been searching quite of bit, but Im seeing conflicting info. I am fairly new to the the older truck scene, but I love the look of the skinny steelies and skinny sidewalls. Im picking up '65 step side with truck rallies on a 5 lug conversion. My questions are...what would the stock 6 lug wheel width be that came on the truck from the factory? Secondly, if I got a set of 5 lug steelies from a late 70s truck, would they be 6" wide?

Re: Stock Steelies

Welcome to the forum.

A little bit of background on factory available 6 lug wheel sizes, their where three sizes. Some of them are kind of rare. They are 15, 16.5, and 17.5" diameter. The most common are the 15x5.5" 6 lug wheel. The answer to your first question is 5.5" for the more common 15" wheels.

A consideration is stock front brakes or are you upgrading to disks. Retaining Stock front drum brakes any wheel will fit, for newer factory disks brakes, need to be sure wheel clears the caliper ( search here will provide more detail on which wheels clear calipers).
FYI, On newer 15" 6 lug wheels, one option is the 15x8" wheel available on Blazers and trucks. Just in case interested. These wheels can be identified by their 4 nubs for retaining the hub caps, earlier wheels are three nub.

Not sure on newer 5 lug wheels.

New aftermarket wheel are available also, possibly in 6, 7 and 8" widths that look similar to
original factory wheel. Have no specific knowledge on them.

Last thought, be aware of wheel backspacing for front suspension clearance, limitations on turning radius, fitment in the wheel openings, just in case you go big.

Re: Stock Steelies

aotte1 - thanks for the info and background on stock sizes! The truck is converted to 5 lug, already - so I am looking at picking up a set of late 70's 15's.

From what I have found...the 5 lug C10 wheels on 71 and later are 6" wide. Is that correct?

Re: Stock Steelies

I don't know trucks from that era, just cars (I have a 71). Full size Cadillac up to 96 will be 5x5 also.

Re: Stock Steelies

My full size Cadillac has no provision on the rim for anything but full wheel hubcaps. Also the edges have a sharper rolled lip on them making anything but o.e.m. caps difficult to install. Can't even pop a beauty ring on them.
