What do you guys think?
I designed myself a subwoofer box based on Swervin Ervin's speaker box, it incorporates a pair of tweeters and a pair of 12 in Rockford Fosgate Punch subwoofers powered by a 400 watt Jenson amp that will be mounted in the middle. The rest of my truck's system will be stock speakers (2 4x10s and 2 door speakers) for now, powered by a 200 watt amp that I borrowed from a friend who moved away. All this hooked up my my old peice of crap Panasonic headunit which didn't have any preamp outs on it when I started
What do you guys think?

i would go out and buy a mid-priced cd player, and a good set of speakers before i threw in thoes subs. trust me, if you spend a lot of money on the subs first, you wont even be able to hear anything but the beat. also you pay for what you get (most of the time) with speakers!!!!!! your sub box looks like a good plan and all, but just hold off untill you put in some better highs and mid range speakers. unless you just want to raddle your teeth really bad haha.
i also designed my box off mikes design, and it sounds very good! i am running two 10'' mtx 8000's with a 1000 watt harman kardon amp. they are hooked up to a pioneer 550 cd/mp3 player. i have polk three way 6/9's in the door and 2 way pioneer 3 1/2's in the dash. i love my system!!! whatever you do, i hope it sounds good!!

lol, I won't be spending a penny on any of this. As you may know, my buddy's truck got stolen the other day, he is gonna let me borrow his subs and amp until he buys a new truck. The stock speakers put out a lot of good high and midrange through that other amp I have as it is, if I crank the high and mid range amp, then leave the bass down, it will do alright, just won't be able to adjust the volume on the head unit at all, its gonna be loud, LOUD or off

i am using stock speakers with subs and it works just fine. my stock speakers arent even powered by an amp. they could be better, but i hear the highs and mids just fine.

yeah, my stocks put out some really nice sound with no distortion, esspecially those 4 x 10s, they put out a nice deep sound. I have a pair of speaker towers designed for a stereo system inside a house back there now, and they start to distort before my stocks do

I would not pu tthe tweets in the same cabinet as the subs. The tweets do not need an enclosure, so I would make just a plate and mount them on top of the box.

Well... I was gonna say, ditch the Jensen. But if you are just borrowing them, then whatever. But as posted above a bunch of clean midpriced speakers will do any system tons of good.
I have Infinity 4" Reference custom mounted in kick panels up front. (Midpriced - $50 a pair) Cerwin Vega 6 1/2" Vega speakers in the back behind the seat(very highend ($150 a pair)) A MTX 350 watt mono amp and a Infinity Perfect 10". The one ten does plenty of damage and the audio is incredibly clean. Still pounds pretty good if I want it to though.

I just did some calculations, each woofer enclosure has about 1.8 cubic feet of volume. The subs only need .8 so I'm gonna install the tweeters, but build a mini box to go around them so the subs don't mess with them. Shouldn't take much of my volume (tweeters are very small) so it should be fine regardless...
Once I can afford it, I'll be buying a nice head unit, then new door speakers, then 6 x 9 conversion brackets for the 4 x 10 speakers, and eventually my own subwoofers.

1.8 cub ft. Is that the inside dimensions? What thickness and kind of wood are you using? Cheap way go with 3/4" particle board. Other woods I have used are 3/4" MDF, that sh!t is heavy. and regular 3/4" plywood coated with fiberglass.

I'm using 1/2 inch reinforced plywood, it will all be carpeted with some heavy duty stage carpet, so the 1/2 inch plywood will have plently of strength to hold up against the battering it will take.
If I can find anything better, I'll use it, we have lots of 1/2" wood sheets around here

I have one Kicker Comp VR 10" Sub in my vette right now. It's in a 1.8 cu ft sealed box, and that's about the perfect size box to have a decent 10" sub in. I definately would recommend, sometime in the near future, upgrading to a better amp, and better midrange/high speakers. But trust me, 2 10's with 1.8 cu ft each, are gonna sound GOOOOD in a C10. In my old C10, I had 2 MTX 8's in .75 cu ft boxes, powered by a 300watt Jensen amp, and I must say, that they hit pretty damn swell. (You can even ask forum member APstGuy, since he bought them off of me. ) |

How big are the tweeters you plan to use? Are they big enough, and capable of handling mid range freq's. If so, you should cap them off for midrange, instead of highs. Small tweeters have a very short directional range of sound travel. With them mounted behind the seat, you won't gain much from them. You would benifit more if you mounted them on, or in your cab rear pillars.....

I was thinking more along a mid range style tweeter, something that can take some midrange. Right now I have a speaker tower back behind the seat with a little 10 watt speaker box ontop, I've blown three of the 10 watt things, but they make a HUGE difference, and totally improve the sound quality, which is my only reason for wanting to install some small midrange / highrange speakers in the tower. Since I am not yet upgrading the rest of my system, I don't want be slicing and dicing the whole truck yet to install speakers in more effective positions =)

If you haven't bought them yet, then that would be the way to go. I thought you already had some tweets. Some medium size mid-range speakers would make a big difference there. I would consider installing them on the top of the box firing up since you have enough air space to make a seperate enclosure....

The 8" are good. I have a 300 watt amp powering them and I can get them to sound better than my friend's 2 10" w/ 1000 watt amp. I like them! My amp gets plenty of juice too - 4 gauge cable running to it!

Where did you get those sub cages? Those look nice! I found out that the woofers are 10", but my design still is good for them

They are pre-fab box & speaker combo specifically made for trucks. The cages you can get nearly anyplace that sells speakers.
In back I have 2 first aid kits, a toolbox w/ tools (duh), a small tool set, a jumper "battery" (who needs another car when you have a portable battery in back?), and a reflective triangle. I'm prepared! Are you? Lol!

I've got jumper cables and a spare tire with no tire iron for the spare tire
