1987 v10 rear u joints
My 31 year old beast with like 104k is still rocking it's stock u joints with the plastic stuff inside.
So when I torch these things to have the goo squirt out and hammer on the inside of the cap to pop off the caps out of the yoke I replace them with u joints that have outer clips right? There is a ridge hiding in there for outer clips? Thing is just a driver and mostly stock doing the joints as preventive maintenance before the snow flies. Doing the brakes next month and then doing the floors before it gets to cold then done for the year. I want everything laid out to make this hour job a hour job. I am tempted to get outer clips and inner clips then just return the inner if they turn out to not be needed. But think there is a ridge in there for outer clips. What are you guys using for u joints?

Re: 1987 v10 rear u joints
heat up the yoke area around the cap untill plastic is all squeazed out . you DO NOT have to make the whole thing glow orange . also watch your self wear safty glasses . the plastic can POP .
let the whole shaft cool down . service the u-joint like normal . remove the old plastic from the yoke when the cap is removed . take a flat file and clean the snap ring seat area from any rust and junk over the years . install new joint and clips that come with it . before install hold the caps on the axle end and wack the yoke each side with a hammer to free up tension from cap install . flex the joint before and after . you will feel a difference . wack the other end yoke areas for the caps also . then grease before install and install the shaft . also tip make sure the grease fittings are in line for easy service and i like them to point to the center of the shaft also . if non greaseable then skip last tip .

Re: 1987 v10 rear u joints
So it is definitely inner clips. No recess in the yoke for outer clips?
