Stiff hood hinges? Try this..

Since I've owned my 85 for a few years I have had the slam the hood to get it to latch. I've read many cases on this site about the hood creasing at the hinges and the braces sold by LMC.
Well I tried something that resulted in amazing results IMO. I actually wrapped a rag around the bottom of the spiral hood spring and then soaked the spring in WD40. The rag was just to catch the excess WD40. I closed the hood and forgot about it. A few days later I had the hood open and a small gust of wind blew the hood down. I was like huh? I opened and closed it a few times literally using two fingers. I'm still amazed how that worked on those type of springs?

Re: Stiff hood hinges? Try this..

hood braces and bending is 73-80 problem a lot . not near as much on 81-up .

and lube stuff every now and then does wonders .

i have been using napa chain & cable lube part# 1370 spray can . its a heavy foam action that clings real good but turn's in to a thick oil base with real good clinging action to stay were you need it .

Re: Stiff hood hinges? Try this..

The hood creasing from the hinges is a problem on the 73-80. But you are correct on the WD40 and rag. I did this also with mine. I replaced my cowl induction hood with an OEM hood. The new hood needed paint, so before I took it to the shop I lubed the springs real good. I didn't want to have to do it after paint. It works like a charm.
