Re: Plenty of extreme’s
How much are they going for? If they are legit I wonder what's going to happen to the market for originals.
EDIT: Just saw a link on another thread .. 625 bucks a pair. They wont be going in my cart. |

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
No part number, made overseas where poor metallurgy is a standard. The real deal will always be worth more than these $695 hooks that cost a fraction to produce... and obviously not rare. What extremes go for now is stupid, so hopefully they will come down.

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
I will pay the price asked for the originals before I would pay $20 each for these. I am familiar with castings from overseas and I think I am pretty close on the cost.

But reproducing something with no specs. and putting them on our trucks is not correct. I have experience with overseas castings and forgings and it is not good. I have personal experience in visiting some of these factories. I do not know where these came from but they do look suspicious only because of the quantity and packaging. I guess I would ask for metallurgical test on the ones posted. Past that I only try to use from the era it dilutes the originality if we do not. Just my opinion. Russ |

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
If they have formal, believable proof of strength, then my hat's off to the savvy businessman that made these happen - and there will indeed be a valid market.
If not, they are as useless as an ejection seat on a helicopter, and almost as dangerous. I assume the latter until proven otherwise, and wouldn't mount one on my truck (just my personal decision) - what's the point of a decorative tow hook? I'm not on fb, is there any discussion of strength or, at least, manufacturing process used? If they're crap, what happens when the poor shmuck three changes of hands down the road actually tries to use one for real? Odds are he won't know to look for a part # or the right type of parting line. |

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
The most important question to get answered here is, are they forged or cast. Cast will have a thin parting line. Forged has a thick parting line and usually has to be ground to match the shape. You never ever want to pull anything with hooks if they are cast, never.

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
You can buy pairs of good strong made to be used as tow hooks that aren't imitations of genuine GM tow hooks for under $100. So these plentiful hooks are going for all that money just because they look like ones people are selling for stupid money because they were made over 45 years ago, are hard to find, came on these trucks and there are fools who would consider buying these for that much money? I'd say by their logic (or lack of it) authentic hooks should be $3,000

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
I would consider these an appearance item. I would not trust them as tow hooks.
After reading further posts, I might be wrong. I would want to be really sure before spending that kind of money, though.

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
I just looked on facebook at the description. It says USA made and same quality of steel as OE hooks. I think it's awesome someone went out on a limb to make these because oem ones are hard to find and $1000+ I've seen many WTB tow hook(s) threads with no responses and now they are a click away for someone that wants them. OEM parts are hard to find that's where the aftermarket comes into play. There are some good eyeroll comments on facebook and scrolling through it was mentioned these are forged.

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
Be really careful with this statement, it doesn't mean they are forged like the original. Oh, wait it's on FB so.....

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
Looks like some marks are present on these that should distinguish them as reproductions. Not all oem extreme bend hooks have part numbers.

They are offered by kevin (da-burb, board member name) from Minnesota. I am not sure if he had these made or is just selling them.

says they are forged from 5180 steel in one of the posts
Bowtie Truck Stop is proud to offer new 1972 Extreme Bend tow hooks. One of the hardest parts to find today because they were only offered during the last half of the 1972 model year. 1972 Extreme Bend tow hooks are now available. Made in the USA with the same grade and hardness steel as OE. These will look amazing on the front of your K5, K10, K20 or anything else you want to bolt them to. $625/pair delivered US. Will come with mounting hardware(not pictured)

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
Well ... This seller on ebay has three different styles from $250 bare -$400 rough chromed -$700. smooth chromed ,
Shipped from Pacific Palisades, Ca seller mrjhall https://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-1972-C...frcectupt=true We have a member in Pacific Palisades, Ca -peterhall building a K20 Maybe he knows the ebay seller ? Looks like the makers mark on the bowtie model is right where it would be covered up by a washer when mounted .? At any rate I'd say tow hooks are going to take a huge dive in price .

Re: Plenty of extreme’s
Its only a matter of time before someone tries to pawn a set of these off as the real deal. But with a price tag of $625/set, I don't think the market will get too flooded. That is still a crazy price to pay for two chunks of steel for the average dude wrenching on these trucks. We are not Jay Leno working on vintage Ferraris for which everything is expected to cost a mint.
