Forest Service Trucks
Hey all, here is the ‘69 forest service c20 i picked up a few months ago. Stock 292 with the same old granny 4speed.
I was wondering if anyone had any pics of their forest service rigs because I would love to see them, as well as any photos of these things out on the job back in the day? https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...1&d=1569910390 https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...1&d=1569910661 Sorry if the photos are sideways, I’m uploading them from my phone. Thanks. |

Re: Forest Service Trucks
Nice truck. It looks like it was taken care of pretty good.

Re: Forest Service Trucks
I really like your truck! It's funny you should start this thread. If I could go out to the shop and start building a truck today it would be a US Forest Service K/20. I've been thinking on it a while. I wanted a municipal type of a build and these trucks rose to the top as giving great visual memories of my more adventurous younger days. I mainly remember the ones at Cape Hatteras National Seashore back when I was all about surfing. You didn't see a lot of 4wds in the '70s like you do these days. But there you did because surf casting is a big deal. The rigs you'd see set up for that were cool as well. But the Dept of Interior ran those green 4wd trucks with wide tires mounted on black steel wheels. So cool!
I don't have any pictures, other than in my head. But here are some USFS trucks of other brands

Re: Forest Service Trucks
Thanks for the reply special K,
Mine came from up in washington. I live in oregon so it’s local enough for me. Part of me wants ti restore it, the old man who sold it to me still has all the CB antennas and lights. I just don’t know if I should turn my daily back into a USFS truck. Thanks for the pictures! |

Re: Forest Service Trucks
Funny thing when I saw this pic, the Forest Service knows a good burger!
The "Legendary" Walker Burger in Walker Ca. on the Eastern Slope of the Sierra's right on Hwy 395, it's always crowded with Fly Fisherman, Tourist/Travelers, Motorcyclist, Back Country Off Roaders etc, and it never disappoints. Closed in the winter months. |

Re: Forest Service Trucks
That's cool. I see this Early '00s 8-lug Suburban around that is that color. I've seen it since it was nearly new. I think it never went to USPS, like an overorder or something

That looks like an exceptionally well cared-for truck.

Re: Forest Service Trucks
Awesome truck. I'm partial to LWB step sides with side mounted spare tires, since I own one, so it's neat to see one that is in such nice condition. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Forest Service Trucks
That's a neat truck. I would totally show off its forest service roots, including a vinyl reproduction of the logo maybe. Probably would skip the lights though but would do the CB antennas and put a CB radio in. Just a thought. Looks like they painted the hubcaps too which is an interesting detail. Kind of cool itself. Build or fix up thread maybe?

Re: Forest Service Trucks
There was a guy up here selling a square body Forest Service Blazer that I wanted soooo bad. But he wanted a LOT of money for it. Too much in my opinion and wouldn't budge on the price. So I had to reluctantly pass.
He must have sold it because it's gone now. So somebody ponied up the money but I couldn't. It had almost 300K miles on it.

Re: Forest Service Trucks
Nice looking truck ,,I am guessing some one got it from the forest service a few years ago and kept it and then now you got it ,right ? Or maybe the forest service still had it and you got if from them...just curious how it stayed looking that good..
The truck must of come from inland in Oregon and not from the coast range ,,salt down there.. I lived up river out in the county of Rainier and salt didn't bother my cars and trucks ,,and Portland is even better for no salt air

Re: Forest Service Trucks
Yeah, he bought it from the 2nd owner. The 2nd owner refreshed it more than restored it, is what I think. I don't think Jmon1123 has noticed this thread was brought back. It's two years old

Re: Forest Service Trucks
special-k is right, forgot about this thread until now, but no thread is ever too old, glad to see these prolonged conversations. Unfortunately the truck has been zapped and with gremlin fever in the electrical somewhere. I’m in the process of turning it to a camper rig, wanting to put an old barth, avion, argosy, etc. camper on the back and take it around oregon using the old highway routes.. maybe if anyone happens to see this and has the style camper i’m looking for? reach out!
as far as the story goes I think it went something like this, it worked up in washington state, then one of the retired workers bought the truck at auction, and later sold it to his buddy who i ended up being neighbors with and bugging him every time i saw him until he sold it to me. |

Re: Forest Service Trucks
That's funny, I didn't notice that the thread was a couple years old. Maybe Warren will tell us a little more about his S10. I passed on a forest service OBS that was the same color. Just couldn't see myself driving around in that green, and at the time it hadn't occurred to me to keep it in its Forest Service livery.
One thing that I like about this forum is that people don't rail at others for reviving a thread or bringing up something that has been dormant for years. On other forums I've seen guys fly off the handle at somebody commenting on a thread that was 6 months old. I swear it's the same guys who go off about using the search function. Makes you wonder, which is it? Search and add to an old thread, or what??? haha. |

Re: Forest Service Trucks
It might be a bit before I can get pictures. It's in a back lot and the owner has to move a few non running trucks from around it to get it out.
Its a 1987, short bed, was believed to be a 2.5 / auto with a tan interior. It has a construction rack on the bed as well.

Re: Forest Service Trucks
Yeah, I could never understand any of that. So what? I only mentioned the thread was brought back because I was answering for Jmon since he hadn't seen it was 'back' yet.
Here are some newer Chevy units

Re: Forest Service Trucks

First I bought a '91 diesel Suburban that was a former WSSC (Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission) vehicle. They do the water and sewer for Washington, DC and immediate suburbs. I ran that thing a long time. Then a bought a, '85 Jimmy that was ordered by a county park service for a ranger vehicle. They didn't take this one and a local guy got it. He was a farmer and didn't drive it much, only local. It was base trim but also a diesel, so carpet and soundproofing, as well as power windows. Not door locks, just windows. The ranger needs to let the passenger side window down from his seat so he can talk to people. That one was a great vehicle, too. and now I drive a '95 K2500 Suburban that was a sheriff dept K-9 search & rescue unit. 20 years old with 120k on it. Been driving that one for 7 years now I found this one in my folders
