Burnouts and 4l80e's
My truck is a '51 with a nice stiff TCI chassis, 9" rear with 4 link, a 2006 Silverado 2500 stock LQ4 6.0 and a rebuilt early 4L80e. I'm running 305/30R20 rear tires so there's a lot of tire on the ground. Only mods to the motor are the Hooker cast headers and K&N type air filter setup. I just had the computer all setup with the truck.
It runs great, starts off hard and accelerates really good, but no burnouts or hardly any real spinning at all. I'm more curious than anything as I see other guys on here with pretty comparable builds smoking the tires. My tuner tells me most are probably running 4L60e transmissions and that the '80 sucks up a lot of power off the line. Of course, he's happy to port the heads, add a cam and bigger injectors, maybe add a looser converter and retune it and guarantees big smokey burnouts! Again, wondering what others' experiences are?

If you cant smoke 30 series banana peel tires, you likely have mechanical or PCM tune issues. A stock LQ4 should have no problem boiling them. Have someone competent datalog/eval the truck on-site and if necessary, find another tuner.

Combined with a converter would get you there as would roll control or line lock. The gears, and converter would do it anytime you please. Roll control when you set up for it. |

I'd put. 4,400 rpm converter in it, have your tuner adjust shift settings and lock up early for less than 50% throttle to keep trans temp down. People get scared of big converters but I used to street drive my 4,900 a lot (honest flash rpm at the track NA, 5,800 on the unit). It's all in the trans tune. That was a 3.73 gear with 315/60/15 drag radials.
I swear by verter over gear and the right trans settings. Your stock 6.0 will be happy all the way around from stoplight WOT to 65-75mph freeway cruises at a nice mellow rpm being you have 3.50 gears. Good luck with traction with said converter at WOT.

A looser converter will help. Also what gear is in the back? The settings on the 4 link and the gear could be combining to dead hook the truck when you hit the gas. A line lock is always a help in busting the back loose.

3.50 in the rear. i think you’re right and it’s not necessarily bad that it hooks and launches hard! I may look at a looser converter at some point.

Did you have torque management removed or seriously turned down in your tune? If not that could be a big reason.

2x on this ^^^. Also make sure he adjusted the PE table to a more car like setting. Truck engines came with terrible PE settings and it's an easy fix with Hp Tuners software.
