Question 61 Deluxe steering wheel on Ididit column

Has anyone been able to install a factory deluxe wheel on an Ididit column? Ididit says its a no go but just figured I'd check in here.

Looking to keep the factory wheel but ditch the old 3 on the tree column.

Re: 61 Deluxe steering wheel on Ididit column

If it's the Retro Series column, the spline is the same as our early steering wheels.

Re: 61 Deluxe steering wheel on Ididit column

And the deluxe wheel attaches to the column without mods/adapters?

That doesn't look like any Deluxe wheel I've seen. It's got those molded-in ribs at the sides.
And it looks a little smaller in diameter.
Anybody know the story on it?

And - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=288712&page=3 - welded a 61 Pontiac Ventura wheel outside to the C10 Deluxe center.
Came out great didn't it?!!

Great. Thanks again - much appreciated. The boss (wife) wants to keep the old wheel in her truck, so we do what we gotta do ; ).

Re: 61 Deluxe steering wheel on Ididit column

My '61 uses a horn contact pin in the wheel, with the sliding contact ring in the column. Later everythings use a pin in the column, and the sliding contact ring in the wheel.

I intend to adapt the '61 wheel/horn to the '68 column I now have, I just haven't gotten there yet.

Thanks! I started to restore an original Bel Air/Deluxe steering wheel awhile back, but the only thing worth salvaging was the hub (I think the previous owner left it outside and the inner steel ring corroded). Anyway, frustrated for being sold a bill of goods and not willing to spend anymore money on what I had already spent too much on, I used a 61 Pontiac steering wheel that I reduced the diameter on many years earlier haning on my shop wall. I cut the hub out of and welded in the Bel Air steerwheel hub.

Re: 61 Deluxe steering wheel on Ididit column

Looks awesome!
I'm probably going to do something similar, but using a Corvair steering wheel with a standard-cab horn button in the center.
Not positive it'll work with that button (so I get rid of the Corvair-emblemed center), but it's a smaller-diameter steering wheel, has the lower part of the horn ring like our Deluxe wheels, and four bands around the perimeter like the Impala wheels.
