61 Manual to Automatic - Brake Pedal?
Ls swapping my 61 that originally had 3 on the tree. New Ididit column with floor shifter for the 4l60e. Question... Should I just remove the clutch pedal or is there an automatic style brake pedal (wider) that could be found and used instead? Guess it doesn't make TOO much different, just curious what others have done. Guess I've failed to notice up until now when looking at other trucks at shows etc.

You could weld a new pedal pad that is wider to the existing brake arm, but trucks had the same brake pedal pad whether stick or auto. My '70 has the same deal, with the automatic.

I'm doing a similar conversion at the moment and I just took the pedal out. Just in case of needing to put it back in some day.
I went for a 700r4 behind a 283. |

Re: 61 Manual to Automatic - Brake Pedal?
Here's what I did on my 64 C-10 - I pulled a brake pedal from a 73, cut the large metal pad & brace off the 73 & welded it to my 64 pedal arm. For a little extra bling I plan on adding the Chevelle stainless trim but haven't gotten around to that yet. I also plan on adding a pedal operated E brake assy from a 71 Caddy and just like the Caddy's when I drop the truck into Drive it will release the brake pedal automatically.

Re: 61 Manual to Automatic - Brake Pedal?
Steeveedee,
If you do a Caddy E brake - one word of caution - DON'T do any emergency brake U turns with the Caddy parking brake system. I figured since there was vacuum to the parking brake when in Drive or Reverse you could stomp the E brake pedal, perform your E brake U turn and be happily on your way. NOPE! it doesn't work that way. The E brake pedal stays locked down until you manually release it with that tiny little lever they have for emergency's or until you place your vehicle in Park and drop it back into Drive or Reverse. I found this out the hard way on my Caddy. Last edited by 64shortbox; 01-28-2020 at 10:43 AM. Reason: miss spelled word |
