CPP drop spindles

I have a 1965 that I want to convert to disk breaks and later model stock calipers, disks, ball joints.

CPP has two options for the 2.5 inch drop spindles;
1963-1970
&
1971-72

What’s the actual difference between these two products?
I thought parts for 63 - 80 were pretty much interchangeable from a tire width pov.

Re: CPP drop spindles

There’s also a 73-87 version.
Same spindle casting.
They are just reamed for different year ball joints and outer tie rods.

Thanks. Can I use the 71-72 version?

Re: CPP drop spindles

You can use the 71-72 version only if you are also running the 71-72 ball joints

Any reason not to use the 71-71 ball joints in my 65?

What steering components are you using. The outer tie rods have to match also.

Re: CPP drop spindles

The easiest would be to use 63-70 conversion spindles and use your 1965 centerlink and tie rods.
71-72 or 73-87 is going to require the same year ball joints and tie rods to be swapped.
You would also need a used 71-72 or 73-87 centerlink. These aren’t sold new.
Then you’ll need to swap pitman arm and idler arm.
It’s a domino affect.
The 67-70, 71-72, and 73-87 idler arm mounts differently on the frame. You’ll have to locate it a drill new holes.
Do you currently have some of these parts?

I have sets of both.
I have a complete 1965 cross member with all original parts..
I also recently purchased a power steering box from a friend that also included the 73-87 components..see pic.
stick with 63-67 parts/spindles or use these 73-87 parts and spindles? any pros/cons either way?

thanks!

If you use the 73 and up you will need the control arms also. I believe they are wider then the 65 control arms. Been 20 years I might have forgot something.

The 73-87 ball joints will work in the older control arms.
The later control arms aren’t any wider.

Yes I know. I set one of my trucks up like that. I even have a thread on it. It the other truck I used all 75 components except the cross member.

I agree.
Use all the 73-87 parts with a p/s box.
You’ll need an adapter plate from Captain Fab on here to bolt the p/s box to your frame.

Re: CPP drop spindles

http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...isc+brake+swap This is basically what you need if you are using 73-87 spindles. I used the 75 spindles I had laying around.

Re: CPP drop spindles

I just got through getting my '65 front end finished & all I'm going to say is this, stick with the 63-70 option. Unless you plan to swap the entire thing out, or like me have some reason to use this year & that year, stick with the 63-70 spindles.

Re: CPP drop spindles

If you want power steering, use the 73-87 stuff. If you want to keep it manual steering, use the 65 stuff

Re: CPP drop spindles

I put the 73-87 ball joints in my 63 control arms. I'm technically running the 73 rotors but they are aftermarket ones. Purchased before I knew I could get junkyard parts
