5.3 & 4L60E swap in 72 K10 question

So I am planning to start this project soon. I am going to use the advance Adapters kit 50-5310 to mate the 4L60E to the NP205 transfer case.(figure 8 bolt pattern) My question is about the clearance between the CV yoke (spicer) and the transmission. AA states in their instructions that there might be clearance issues. They did not have any specifics and referred me to High Angle Drive Line. They said with my front shaft angle at 15 degrees I am right at the limit. Truck is lifted 4 inches. Anyone out there with this clearance issue? Trying not to spend $750 on adapter kit and installing the shaft in the 4L60E only not to be able to install the front shaft. Thanks for any input.

The driveshaft should clear with the lift.

You need a rear speed sensor to make the transmission shift. Are you going to mate a VSS to your 205?

The advance adapters 4 bolt to 6 bolt NP205 adapter has the VSS provision.

Re: 5.3 & 4L60E swap in 72 K10 question

I had pictures of the interference and what I did to alleviate it in one of the links in my signature. But I have been unable to find them, sorry.

I didn't have a lift, your 2" should help.

I ended up cutting the corner of the pan and having it welded back on backwards. It worked and I never had a problem. To me the transmission pan interference is the biggest negative about an LS/4L60 4 X $ swap. I have looked into the transfer case that comes with an LS pull out and changing the front axle to a drivers side drop (which is what the 4L60 was designed to be used with). That option has its own issues.

You should be OK dimpling the pan?

Re: 5.3 & 4L60E swap in 72 K10 question

Thanks for the input, I plan to use the provision in the adapter for my VSS. As far as the lift helping, I was told that the lift would make clearance worse. I don't see how that can be since the shaft is going down away from the pan right from the T-case. I can notch the pan if it's a little to close. I have a lot of things to figure out. I do have a complete 04 Tahoe as the donor so I have all the goods from it.

Re: 5.3 & 4L60E swap in 72 K10 question

I have installed a 5.3/ 4L60E and kept the NP205 in my 72 Blazer. I am running a 2" lift and it looks like driveshaft clearance will be tight but I have not installed it yet. I used the AA kit and Dirty Dingo engine mount. So far I am pleased with the swap, still have a few more details to sort out.

Re: 5.3 & 4L60E swap in 72 K10 question

I have the AA 4l60e to NP205 in my Jimmy with a 4" lift. I ended up notching the pan like Thealien said. If i remember correctly it would have cleared with a 1/16th of an inch but that is way too close in my opinion. The last thing i wanted was tranny fluid on a hot exhaust pipe. That's a fire that you wont put out.

I have a 2 inch lift with 4l60e/np205, front drive shaft was very close I just dented the corner of the pan with a block of wood and hammer and now have clearance

Re: 5.3 & 4L60E swap in 72 K10 question

I put a 5.3 LM7 4l60e in my 70 K10. The clearance is tight for sure. I did a little grinding work on the yoke. I did not have to dimple, hit or dent the transmission pan. I also used the VSS signal in the AA NP205 to 4l60e adapter. I made a special plug for the vacated spot in the NP205. You can check out my build thread in my signature.

Re: 5.3 & 4L60E swap in 72 K10 question

Hey guys I'm doing the same swap here but the kit didn't come with instructions and this is the only thing I can find on their website.

file:///C:/Users/Mader/Downloads/50-5310-1.pdf

Does anyone have a link to better instructions? I'm not having any luck finding anything.
