1962 GMC dually front end swaps?
I have 62 GMC it's a DRW truck, I wanted to know if the 73-87 swap can be done on the 60-62 trucks like it can on the 63-66 trucks? The 60-62 trucks have torsion bar vs 63-66 which have coil spring front ends.
I've got the torsion bar front end, I need to update my front end as my wheel bearings have went obsolete plus power steer and disc brakes aren't to bad of side effects. I've also heard tell of being to swap spindles with a 67-72 era trucks? Any more information on this one?? Thanks for your time Mike Last edited by GMC-V6; 08-08-2021 at 06:39 AM. |

Re: 1962 GMC dually front end swaps?
Yes you can....I have an 83 1500 front end under my 62 panel, I added a 1/2" steel block on top of the frame for the motor mounts. 67-72 front cross member also works including 3/4 ton 8 lug if you want extra heavy duty......I can get you photo's if you need them.

Re: 1962 GMC dually front end swaps?
I just swapped a 84 front end onto my 61 half ton frame and it was pretty easy. I also have a 62 c30 chevy that I have a 81 c30 front end for. I'm planning on doing that swap in the next year or so after my 61 is on the road. It looks like it will be as easy or easier than the half ton.

Re: 1962 GMC dually front end swaps?
Will my GMC big block V6 fit right back in after doing this swap?
Will the front end swap effect anything engine wise?? Thanks Mike |

Re: 1962 GMC dually front end swaps?
I know the engine mounts are welded to the frame and from Markeb01's build thread, it does not look like it would be a problem. The only concern may be the extra weight the the V6 brings with it.

Re: 1962 GMC dually front end swaps?
The square body trucks had 454s I would think if you ran those same springs and such it'd handle the weight the best?
The 454 V8 is 685lbs 305D V6 is 735lbs, So I'd think after the swap over just run the big block coil spring set should ok?? I am sure the front sags a bit anyway so it'd sit about the same as it does now so no difference would even be noticed Mike Last edited by GMC-V6; 08-14-2021 at 02:58 PM. |
