Heating coils to lower
I know I have heard a lot of the guys here saying this is totally unsafe practice, but here in Classic Trucks Magazine, they have openly done it on their project Old School
http://www.classictrucksweb.com/tech/0402cl_oldsc/ a direct qoute "After many months of cutting, hammering, shaping, filling, welding, sanding, primering, and spraying, Project Old School finally has a coat of black suede on it. We left off last month by torching all four coils 'til the '64 was resting on the bumpstops and bolting on the new red steelies and wide whites from Stockton Wheel and Coker Tire, respectfully." SO is this safe or not??

by having it "resting on the bumpstops" ut's got no suspension at all which is basically what they had with the oldschool horse and buggies so if you want the look at and smell the south end of a horse i'd say that's the way to go

Well since they heated them till it's on the bumpstops...it's perfectly safe...lol...since the chance of getting over 15 mph without a boxers mouthpiece and a kidney belt, is about nill

Just because some dumba$$ in a magazine does it, doesn't mean it's safe. In all reality, they won't really ever drive the truck. It will be for show. If you are going to drive your truck, then luck be with you for torching your coils. Just spend a few bucks and get the shorter ones. Do it right, so the rest of the world around you is safe. I know for years they all torched coils to lower them, but then, with the progression of knowledge and technology we learned that that might not be the best way to go about it. If it were the 50's or 60's no one would question that method, but we know better now.

The caption under the last picture says:
"Chris torched the springs (we would never drive it this way), and I took this teaser shot just to tide us over 'till next month." I think they torched them just to get the look. Dan |

I'm in the computer industry and RTFM means "Read The F#@king Manual". Used primarily as a put-down when an answer to the question posed is obvious, or could be found with little effort.
I extended this to RTFA, meaning "Read The F#@king Article". Just busting on ya, that's all. I thought it had more sizzle than "Duhhhh".
