Patina on '72 Chevy Hood

[C10 - C90 Bill]

I'm about to paint my truck and many guys have told me that my hood is too valuable to paint, lol.

Opinions?

I personally prefer nice healthy shiny paint on my vintage rides. With that said, it has a very good Texas sunburn if you are into the distressed, patina appearance. Some are done well. Others scream too cheap/lazy to paint.

My opinion is new paint. I'm hoping to eventually repaint my truck but their are two paint jobs on it. The base/clear for sure has to come off, and some body work is needed. I may just roll it as-is.

I can’t recall seeing a nice painted vehicle with a patina hood. It’s be just as strange to see a patina vehicle with a painted hood!

I also love brand new paint and will be starting on it soon. But too many are saying it's too valuable to paint, lol. Thinking of maybe switching hoods.

Do what makes you happiest. IMO, paint it. I feel this patina things is way too over-rated and just silly.

Unless you buy aftermarket every used hood will be like that and if you buy an aftermarket by the time you get it fitting right any money you got from the original will be eaten up . I picked this one up fairly cheap for my 68 . Original paint patina was nice and it’s now painted

I'll be the odd one out, I prefer original paint patina. I'm not a fan of fake patina or patina on a paint job someone did on our trucks in the 80's or something.

I personally think that painting a truck that had a nice original patina does take something away from it. It loses it's character and to me, loses its appeal.

They're only original once.

He’s painting the truck regardless of what he does with the hood . Original is nice but a lot of these original patina trucks have rot on the fenders and other areas not to attractive in my opinion . I have a patina truck and two restored ones it’s a matter of what the owner wants their truck to be .

Only real , org paint patina for me. My hood is a total mess on the inside lip. I managed to weld supports in there to salvage it. To match the exact fade on somebody elses truck will be a shot in the dark. If it is straight and usable, sand it down and use it. My .02

Whoever said it's too valuable I'd sell it to them for double what a new one would cost. As others have said all patina or all new. A patina hood on a painted truck wouldn't be spectacular

Having a shiny paint truck the 73 and a patina truck the 68 I prefer the patina.
Shiny paint causes anxiety.

Yup! For many years when I was still working, I made it a point not to repaint my drivers. Parking lot rash was a real concern. Clean and mechanically sound were the watch words. It's another reason I'm hesitant to paint my truck.

This. A painted hood on a patina truck would look out of place in my opinion but......your truck.....your call.

If you get a legit offer or interest in it for sale, do so....after you find an original replacement hood. Too bad your so far away, I have a nice, straight, no dents repainted '72 hood I would like to sell. HATE trashing or scrapping good usable GM original parts but don't seem to find an interest in it. Also have a good decent 69-72 Chevy radiator support....same thing.

This is me. I like pretty, shiny trucks but I still do dump runs and bump stuff into it. I went to a car show a few weeks ago and people were excited about my gol' dang ugly truck. The driver's side rocker is so far gone I dare not step on what is left. I'm happy it runs well, is quiet with its stock exhaust and the A/C works. It surprises those who ride or drive it as it looks like Ned in the First Reader.

Some are getting the wrong idea here. I am definitely painting the whole truck. But if the hood is too valuable to paint over, instead of losing it, I'm thinking it may be worth it to find another hood to use in it's place.

I was just kidding, because I was going to give you a list like cab, bed, tailgate, fenders, hood, doors, all being too valuable to paint. I don't think that hood is too valuable to paint. Just paint the whole thing. If you don't need it, there's no point of trying to work in aftermarket sheet metal on a good truck. I recommend taking some before and after pictures, so you can reminisce. I never take enough before and after pictures when I do stuff to my truck.

Too valuable to paint? Meaning it's worth $1000, $2000, $5000?

It needs to be worth real money to offset the cost of searching and obtaining, a solid, straight replacement, to be fitted on your truck. And in my world it also needs to give you some cash to apply to the rest of the truck.

Have any of the appraisers stepped up with cash in hand? Until someone does its biggest value is on your truck.

I have zero problems with "patina" cars until people say two words: Clear Coat.
Then I think it becomes a bit of a hoax.

I like the look of your truck as is. Wish we could see the rest of the truck for a better opinion. Wheels and stance make all the difference.
If you`re set on painting the truck, paint the hood. Don`t hassle selling and buying another hood. I don`t think the juice is worth the squeeze.
