GET A RENTAL! they said....
Silly parents Im driving up to vegas this weekend to move a friend back to phoenix. My parents don't think the truck will make it I've only been driving it two hours a day back and forth to work for the last year and a half. They'd rather see me spend $170 on rental truck and gas instead of $70 for gas only. Like I have any extra money?!?
So I just thought Id get some opinions from you guys. Its the 79 Im taking. Cruise at 80mph doing 2000rpm, everything is under 15,000miles old. Think Ill make it?

Just to be safe, you might want to try doing a little less than 80 mph. Say maybe 78.5 ????
Just remember - Chevys are born working trucks. On a related note: I rented a 24' moving truck for our move last November. Of course, it was a 5 speed manual (different than my '86 automatic), but I felt strangly at home when I jumped in and found myself staring at a 73-87 vintage instrument cluster. Chevy rules. |

tom i drove my beast down from vegas last year when i moved and it made it no problem with god knows how many miles on the engine and at the time failing tranny.you should make it no problem.

do a pre trip inspection all belts hoses etc. check the condition of your oil and tranny oil and coolant top it off if needed etc. 90% of all breakdowns are because of poor maintenance. Ive gotten 280K out of a truck cause of my stringent maintenacne .... besides you think they maintain rentals any better therye just newer cronolgically not better taken care of

Good stuff guys. Made my parents check out the thread The oil is about 800miles old, tranny fluid maybe 5000, anti-freeze/water a couple months. Im going over everything tonight along with tightening down my exaust. And eddie, you should see the backpack I carry behind the seat. I have so much crap in there for any situation

I didn,t think you were old enough to get a rental and if your parents rented it for you to use on the trip , you still would not be insured and your own insurance will not transfer over unless your truck is in a certified repair shop . If there was an accident that would be big problems . I went thru that last year trying to get a rental for my son .

Dad found me a place that accepts 21, and Im pretty sure I have rental car insurence threw my platinum credit card [not sure what kind right now]

WOOHOO! Made it! 80mph the whole way almost, not alot of people out and about. Averaged 16mpg. Temp, oil pressure, a/f ratio, volts, everything was perfect the entire way EXCEPT for the last 10min. Just driving along on the freeway like I had been and the torque convertor un-locks. Im like WTH? and flip the switch for the manual torque convertor lockup, still nothing. Make it home with temps almost getting to 160* [ran about 90* the whole way hehe] I let it sit overnight, and preto! the TC lockup works again. I have no idea what happened.....

My T/A with a M6 pulls just at 2000 @ 80

My tranny temp gauge is from bowtie overdrives and starts at 100 degrees, but there is a little room from nothing to 100 so I know its about 90. 90 is indeed a little too cold for tranny fluid, but when Im stuck in rush hour traffic with 110* outside I'll take all the cooling I can get.
So it looks like my TCC soleniod is out. A whole 10,000miles on the tranny and this thing goes out. I hate automatics so much more then ever. Thank you for turning me away from ever buying an auto again bowtie
