wind shield washer pump
This site is excellent. I'm glad I found it. I have a question I hope one of you can answer. My 83 Chevy: When I push the wiper button to wash my windshield. The darn thing keeps pumping until it empties the resevoir. Is it a simple fix? or do I need a new pump?

Probably the switch. I don't know if the dash switch ones have a module, but if they do replace that.

There is also a cam mechanism on the wiper motor under the black plastic cover. When you hit the switch it energizes a solenoid which pulls the pump lever off the stop, allowing it to pump. When you release the switch the cam mech should push the lever back onto the stop. I tried in vain to fix mine many times, but I ended up replacing the mechanism. Yours may just need to be cleaned and lubricated, it's worth a look.

I've been fighting this same thing with my truck for some time. If you pull the black cover off of the motor on the firewall there is a white plastic wheel that rotates 360 degrees. If it doesn't go all the way around it won't stop pumping. The teeth on mine are slightly stripped and sometimes it won't catch the last tooth to make it stop. As for getting a new gear I found that you can't order one from the dealer, discontinued. Maybe at a junkyard or Pep Boys said a new moter was about $45.00 which I assume would include all the gears but I haven't ordered it yet so I don't know for sure. Good luck.

Thank you for your responses. I will take a closer look at the pump, and its moving parts. - Ryan
