What year 700R Transmission to get ?
Looking to buy a 700R for my 67 shortbed, what should I look for ? Don't have a lot of $ trying to find one to put in that doesn't need a rebuild. I am running a 383 stroker I think from looking at old threads that 87-92 are the years I want. I have a trans out of a 94 Chevy one ton truck that has reverse and first gear out. Is this something I should try to use ? Thanks

I would say any year as the crappy ones were the 81-87. I would say that they all have been rebuilt by now and you will have the better upgraded parts in them. Good luck

I researched this a while back and do not quite recall what it is that I learned. I do remember that the newer ones were believed to be better. A reputable transmission shop advised me that what matters most is that it is rebuilt using a current kit that has all of the latest improvements. Mine has an internal mechanical lockup and requires no electrical switches or sensors. Just a TV cable to the carb and that is it. It works great and runs cool. I believe mine is an 82'. Absolutely love it, and the mileage.

If you have your choices, choose one out of a van or Suburban with the old style speedometer. The later pickups used an electronic signal generator for the speedometer rather than the normal cable.
It's something that can be overcome, but it's going to cost you more money to convert it to the cable speedometer drive.

87 and newer had an aux valve body and some other upgrades from the years before it. if you are going to rebuild it then you can opt for some 4L65E parts. like hardened shafts and drums and a 5 planetery set up instead of a 4.
Best of luck Rat

a 4x4 case is shorter and has a flang for the transfer case to bolt up to.... also the output shaft is shorter. I built mine up and cant wait to test it out once i get the engine finished and have time outside of school to work on it..... but you can stay stock with these transmissions or go wild with them... i went wild! from what i hear the covette survo's are great! i opted for a billit and some other goodies. but my friend has a covette survo and it hits second nicly
Best of luck Rat

I found one today for $75-100.00 out of a 88 IROC was working fine when removed..supposedly..he did not have the torque converter with him and I wasn't sure what I was looking at so I did not buy it yet. I have his # and will probably call him tommorrow. Still not sure if this is the way to go,it is cheap but will I have to take it back out and rebuild it ? who knows
