Power steering problems, need HELP!!!
I put power steering on the 68 (2wd), took all the parts from a 72 2wd. I finally got the pulley today that matches the billet ones I am running on the motor. I have had nothing but problems since.
I can't get rid of the grinding/whining noise. Now, I don't litterally mean "grinding", but I can't spell the noise You know the noise I mean, the sound the pump usually makes when it is really low on fluid. I have bled the crap out of this thing, 3 quarts worth! I am bleeding it at the steering gear on the pressure hose. I just can't get rid of the noise, and it turns like crap too. When going from lock to lock, it has spots where it is easy to turn (like it should), and spots where it is tight. I have adjusted the gear box several times, nothing. And that is with the front end off the ground. Drive it and it is worse, then it makes that damn noise that I can't get rid of! Now, the pump is a reman unit. I have had it about 7 years, BUT, it has been tightly sealed in the same thick plastic bag it came in when I bought it, still covered in the fluid that it was shipped in, so everything was still nice and soft, not hard or brittle (o-rings I mean). As far as I know, the gear box should be OK. I got everything from the donar truck except for the pump, and I took the pump from a 72 4wd and installed the new/remaned pump I already had. Everything on the pump went together the reverse as it came apart. I double checked that the pressure side went in correctly, and it all looks right. HELP!! I have no more $$$ to put into this thing! I may put the manual gear back on for now until I can figure this thing out.

In my experience it could be the pump. How does the wheel turn? Easy or hard? When I put power steering on my 68 which coincidently will be useless since I am doing a frame swap pretty to an 88 Chev 1500 SWB frame! But to get back on topic, my ps pump was making an AWFUL Whine and it was really easy to turn then went really stiff going back and fourth. I replace the pump itself and bled the system, whine was gone and so was the inconsistent steering (i.e. Smooth and then stiff) now all easy. Also was the steering box left open?

Sounds EXACTLY like my problem! I had CarQuest deliver a reman pump with reservoir today ($60.00 + core), so I will put it on tonight and give that a shot.

Which hole is...
the pressure side??? Sorry I am not trying to hijack your thread. I am to the same point on my truck and need to know. Is it the hole near the frame or the hole nearest the fender???? Thanks in advance. FCG

Should be the one on the frame side, or looking in from the left wheelwell, the front one.

It did!! After I got it on and started it, I noticed right away that it sounded better, only had a little whine. I turned it lock to lock, and it got quiet, so I topped off the fluid and backed it out of the shop. Almost immediately it started whining again! Oh, I was mad!! So I pulled her back in and put her up on the jackstands, and commenced to go lock to lock again, but this time holding it at full lock for about 20 seconds at a time. At one point when I was at full right, I ran it up to about 3000 RPM's ......... all of a sudden that thing screamed like a smashed cat, then went totally silent! Set her on the floor and had to add ALOT of fluid, so I knew I was able to chase the air pocket out.
Drove her to work today, let me tell ya, having power steering is AWESOME!!!!

for future reference bleed at the return hose coming from the box, with front wheels off grond & at idle. do NOT hold at lock (damages recerculating balls in box).
