77 Trivia

I need some help trying to locate the correct radio knobs for my 77 Cheyenne. The radio may not be exactly correct, but it's an AM/FM so it will do for now. The knobs are generic and look all wrong. I assume the radio knobs should match my headlight knob. Can anyone verify this...

It's pointless of me to reply, but I just put a CD player in a few weeks ago (original AM radio was broken), and so I threw away the radio and knobs. They were black and just like the headlight knob. But anyways, I can verify that my 1977 C-10 had radio knobs that matched the headlamp knob.

Here's what the volume knob looks like (not sure if this exact one fits the 77 radios though)...I think the tuning knob had a graphic with a line with other lines going through it or something..:

eamims the fact that you threw them away is frustrating, not pointless. At least you are able to verify what I was thinking. I was pretty sure from what sales info I have the black knobs are correct. Thanks for the info.

Jonboy I really appreciate your offer. That is very considerate of you to do that, but I would prefer to find the black knobs. Now that I know what I am looking for, I assume they won't be too hard to find...

Yea, I just checked the garage again hoping I would find them...no luck. But I recall each knob had a bezel also.

here's another photo of what mine looked like..:

They should match the headlamp knob. I scored a set of the chrome ones in the ebay ad this weekend, if you want them, they are yours. PM me your address and I will get them sent out. BTW, I think I may have a headlamp knob to match the radio knobs (chrome).

Ken,

I don't know for sure, but my thinking is GM used the same style radios/knobs in different vehicles in the 70's. If your option was a base AM/FM radio I would think any of the knobs would be real close to each other, if not exactly the same. Back then wasn't like it is now. They didn't design a different radio for every type vehicle. I bet the above knobs are like the ones that came on your truck. I have seen the above style knobs on many a different GM vehicles in my day. Of course I have seen the chrome style knobs also. I guess it had to do with which option the vehicle came with.

Not to change the subject but I saw the picture of you bezel. Is that chrome painted on or did you buy a new bezel already chromed? I painted mine with some paint that claimed to be chrome but it doesn't look that good.

That's kind funny since BeerMonkey asked the same question in my thread New toys...a month later that shows those pics. That is the bezel that was on it when I bought it. It is the stock Cheyenne bezel, which comes with chrome inserts. The chrome paint won't even get close to the same effect. It is good for using behind you gauges to brighten them up though....

77 Trivia

Ken;

Here's how the part numbers break out:

3986872 - Volume Knob (Same as NOS knob on ebay)
3986829 - Tuning Knob
Here's where it starts to get hinky
3986873 - Tone Control
3980197 - Auxiliary speaker control (I think this is only on Blazers & Suburbans)

I check the sales brouchers and AM/FM stereo radios are not mentioned until 1980. I think this is why one on the "tone" knobs doesn't have an ear.

Hope this helps

My 2 cents worth

Just to confirm for you, I have a 76 GMC and the black knobs and rings from eBay in the pics above are exactly what is in mine. It was an AM only, which I have since replaced with a NOS RCA AM/FM/Cass, and I was able to reuse the original knobs to keep the factory look (at least for the most part). I just dropped my truck off at the body shop for new paint today, or I'd take a picture of them in the truck for you.

dswancutt Thanks for the part numbers. That will help in my quest for the right knobs.

76sierraclassic Good deal. I just went back and looked at my brochures. It seems I missed a pic that shows the knobs posted above.That confirms what we were all thinking. It's time to go sniping....

Guys I appreciate y'alls help. I shopped Ebay and got a set at a real right price. I thought it would be better to get a complete set at one time. The correct silver knobs aren't pictured. The seller will ad the roght ones before shipping...

Probably are the same ones Jeff. But knowing Ken, he's so anal he won't buy them unless the ad says they are specifically made for a 77 Chevy truck. Right Ken. :p

77 Trivia

Ken;

I'll check my parts manual when I get home tonight to see what the correct P/N's are. I know that the black knobs show up on eBay from time to time.

Why thank you for the compliment Mike. Actually as long as they look like the right ones I'm ok with that. Now if I happen to run across a set of "numbers matching" knobs, you know I'm a player... :p

Hey Ken, FYI those silver knobs back up at the top of the thread were the same as on my '86 when I go it.
