Problem!!!

dont know how bad it is, i'm assuming not really bad but....

anytime the engine is revved up high (5000rpm+) the dip stick pops out some and sprays some oil everywhere. i've noticed this burning smell after i take it up high before but just noticed the oil burning on the headers today after i drove it some.

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...13&prmenbr=361

thats the dipstick i have, it just fits right into the side of the block and seals with a small o-ring.

i'm thinking that has something to do with it poping out too, because its not in there REALLY tight at all.

would a dipstick like this be better?:

oh yeah, i got my tach hooked up. i think i kinda might know why i was running HIGH 15's at the track. because i was only revving it to about 5200 rpm's or so

you have a problem with crank case ventilation. Did you take the PCV off? Do you have breathers on the valve covers???

breather on pass side and pcv on drivers side? Check the pcv, pull it out and see if it still rattles when you shake it. To check it, put a breather on both sides and see if that fixes it, there's quite a bit of crank case pressure if your dipstick blows out.

Any ring problems that you are aware of? What's the fuel consumption like, did you do a leak down test on the engine?

new engine, rings not seated yet would be my guess. it took the 355 i built in HS 12,000 mi before it finally seated the rings.

those PCV valves may look nice but they are junk, they are known to give crank case evacuation problems. Pull it off and replace with a stock style one. They may look ugly but they get the job done.
You overheated the nicely coated header one pipe is dull. Nice engine BTW Like your valve covers.

What brand are the ones that are junk?

Does the dipstick tube not fit smooth? Does it have a tab on it to secure it under a bolt?

Do you have a flare or belling tool? You might want to lightly flare or bell the end of the tube and then tap it in the block. Also a little bracket of some sort is also a good idea.

the dipstick fits right into the block. it fits snug i guess. there is no tube or tab to mount it to.

i swapped pcv valves with the old one off my 305. and guess what... the dipstick doesnt pop out now took it up to about 6000rpm's twice and it never popped out. i could still smell the oil burning, but i'm betting its the oil just burning off of the headers that was on there from earilier, there wasnt anymore new oil anywhere else.

Let me know if it helps because from what I can tell mine uses the same pcv valve you get from the part store for our trucks but what do I know let me know if it helps at all.

Its just the way they are designed that makes them junk. I haven't seen anyone have any luck with those style PCVs.

they do look good though.

like i said in an earlier post, i replaced the nice looking alum. one with the stock one from my 305.

the dipstick did NOT shoot out of the block after driving it hard and revving it up to 6k+ rpm's.

i'm gonna leave it on for a while and see if it will ever shoot out using this one.

Back to your question about the Lokar one. The first one I bought broke at the full indicator mark. Yes, this went into the pan. Had Lokar send me another one, dropped the pan and cleaned everything up. Installed the new and still had to make adjustments to the rod so it would read correctly. Nice otherwise.

why not use AC? well okay, they're not very pretty. You know what would really be different? Mount the PCV valve somewhere else than the damned valvecover.

I got the breather and PCV to match from Billet Specialities. It uses a stock PCV valve inside the billet piece. There is absolutely no difference in having the billet breather style cover and not having it. All the ventilation is through the stock unit. It's just a cover. I don't see why everyone thinks they are junk. Although mine didn't come from Autozone.

Go with the stock 90 degree elbow style pcv valves. They look best on freshly painted oem stamped steel valve covers, with a new oem pcv valve grommet. Im a sucker for the stock look.
