:) Bigger brakes???

I was wondering if anyone has done this yet=bigger brakes on the front. I'm wondering if it would be possible to put brakes from the 73 thru 86 trucks on my 71? This way i can put bigger baer brakes on it. I believe all i need is the knuckles off the year/years i want. Maybe its not poss to put bigger brakes on a 4x4? Please help. Thanks Todd. I forgot, i have a D44

D44 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton use the same caliper. The 3/4 ton have larger(diameter) rotors. I guess you could find maybe a aftermarket dual piston caliper. You could also purchase aftermarket cross drilled rotors. Have you upgraded the rear to disc yet?

A couple of guys (with 3/4 ton & up suspension) have put the master cylendar and booster for a 3/4 ton on their 1/2 ton blazers and said the difference is night & day. Check over on ColoradoK5.com and do a search.

The prob is everytime i look up upgraded brakes, they never list our year trucks 67-72. yeah Jim I just want bigger rotors, & better calipers. Adam, do you just use the knuckles & hubs & brake stuff from the d60? Thanks for the replies. Also jim, no rear disc yet, & thanks for answering my ? on the wheel stud prob for budweiser.

I meant to swap in a whole dana 60 axle...overkill, but it would accomplish what you are looking for, lol. or you could even swap in a newer dana 44 from a '73 up, as they are a little stronger than the 71-72 models. this is probably too much work just for some brake upgrades, but I thought I'd toss it out there anyway.

EDIT: as for your dana 60 outers question, it would probably work but it 1). wouldn't be a bolt on job and 2) the dana 60 SRW hub bodies will run you about $350/set, new OR used. heck, you could grab a complete dana 60 for about $800!

Should be able to get cross drilled rotors. They would be for a 71 to 78 chevy 3/4 ton. That would help with cooling and brake fade. I guess we need some links to aftermarket brake suppliers. Anybody?

p.s. Your welcome!

I am going to put a hydro booster on just like whats on my 04 suburban & i know that will help. Also urathane bushings & body mounts are never listed for a 4x4 our vintage. For a kit anyways. You all that have them, did you do a kit for a 2 wd & add the transfer case mount. Back to the brakes, have you ever noticed the newer trucks, & even 73-90 trucks 2wd with over size brake kits. Thats what i was hoping for, only for 4x4. Oh yeah Jim, your 2" tough lift fits 35's with no probs huh. Ive been going crazy trying to decide what lift to get. I want 35's, But dont want a 6" lift. Im looking at eaton detroit springs 3" lift & toughs 4" lift. any suggestions? Sorry about the back & forth with questions, but thats how they pop into my head & if i dont put them on paper so to speak i'll forget. lol Thanks again Todd

Well I ordered a Heavy duty 2" lift and with my 1/2" longer shackles the 35s fit but will rub. Here's a shot of both trucks,

I have not done it yet but you should be able to find the required engine/tranny and tc mounts in poly.

jegs or summit lists cross drilled rotors for 71-up dana 44s. look in the truck section (or is that summit) anyway, they both have the same rotors, but only jegs lists them for older rigs. but same part number. hmmmmmm.

there are about a few hundred aftermarket brake compines-like stainless and so on-and they carry big price tags.....but lets not forget hotrodders have been changing over brakes for decades and they know how to squese a buck...i just changed over my brakes to four old new cadilac elderado disc brakes-and every thing fits because it's chevy half ton,or even 3/4 ton......but if you want a place that has the best deals in the brake buiness go to cpp in calif...@ www.classicperform.com as they specialize in old chevy everything and are getting a new line in of these 6-8' calibers in about 4 months and will sell set ups at half or less of places like stainless and such....

give them a try and you'll find yourself getting many things from these guys at low low prices,,,sometimes better then you can do at a junk yard.....

hope this helps
