what do I need to take apart?
I haven't gotten my manual yet for my new 73, so i have a silly aimple question... ok... when I put the truck in gear the needle that shows what gear your in doesn't move... it's stuck way over to the left... when i got the truck like 5 days ago it worked, but today, no go. so is this a simple fix or what? I know i need to get the manual, but i hadn't gotten around to it yet and hadn't planned on workin on the truck just yet. Thanx guys

take off the guage bezel, and the plasict piece that goes directly under the column. you should see where the wire that connects it to the column screws in place. chances are, with 30 year old plastic, its broken. if so, there's no way to do it but pull the coulmn, and putting a new piece on it (lots of work). if it were mine, i'd leave it if that's the case. the one in my DD isnt functional, i have the part to fix it, just too lazy to do so i guess.

Are you talking to yourself??? The needle moves by some string attatched to a clip. A great example of GMs world famous cost cutting.

That's a pretty neat trick Jeremy... what's up with the invisible post anyway???
Oh well, it sounds like the "Invisible Mechanic" got you your answer. It's a pretty simple fix. It'll be pretty clear once you pull the bezel. Have Fun. |

There is a string that is clipped to the steering column just under the dash cover. It is a little black clip that slips over the end of the tube that rotates when you move your shift handle. If you look real close you will be able to see it or the scratches that it left on the end of the tube. The string then has a torturous path that it follows to get to the gear indicator. the indicator is connected to a spring, which returns it to the left side of the gear indicator. Kinda like a "SEE AND SAY" toy. The string could be broken or the clip is disengaged.
