5.3 SSR Engine Installed with 4L60E
I finally got the engine in. I used the stock 6cyl engine towers and moved the engine forward a little. I am now able to use my driveshaft without modification. I will post a picture of it totally in later.
Also got a Ididit steering column and a Grant Steering wheel to install

I was just reading about this exact engine (All alluminum 325cid) today in Car Craft...an extra 100 horse with just a cam and headers. No other mods at all.
Pretty sweet. |

I am running a inline fuel pump and using a blazer tank conversion. Install the Radiator today for a 5.3L, and started the Ididt steering column conversion.

You've made it further with your project than I have on mine. I've decided that the engine swap will be a phase 2 for my project next year. Until then I'll get by with a 383. Looks like you're using the truck accessories?
How are you running the fuel pump, inside the tank or outside? Just curious how you plan to run the return line and vapor line back to the fuel tank if you're keeping it in the cab. |

everyone is doing this swap now and for good reasons. When I did mine my the custom harness and F-body PCM programming were a major purchase I had not planned on so keep that in mind if anyone else is considering this swap. The custom harness smothes it up alot but sets you back $650 on up. The custom programming to eliminate VATS and other essentials to make the motor run on the PCM will run you 3-400! Not to mention if you plan on a cam or longtubes you will need to tune it. You can get LS1edit and do it yourself but it is $550 for one VIN.
Good luck.

Jared @ Current Performance built the harness for me. It is a totally custom harness allowing you to specify lengths for the fuse block and ECM. Worth every penny. Speartech wants $750 for a harness like this unless their price has changed in the last few months. If you take a look at the truck based harnesses the ECM is located in the driver front draped over the intake. The custom harness allows you to hide virtually everything.
Speartech charges $300 for a mail order tune. We did almost 20 pulls on the dyno jet chassis dyno with a wideband o2 to get everything where I was happy. This is more what I was talking about. I promise you will see rwhp gains over a mail order tune when you start putting different induction, exhaust, and cam swaps on these motors. Not to mention you will know exactly what you are making for reference. I think this is worth the extra $100 I paid. JMO...

ima hafta bookmark this threat lol, this is good info. Im gonna be needin it.
my dads suggested that we use the interior wiring of the silverado my stuff came out of, its all there, just gotta find out whats what. He thinks it will be more professional and easier to troubleshoot to just pick up a 2000 silverado hanyes manual and be able to do all things electrical with it. |

DarkFox1, there is always more than one way to complete a project. If you are short on time I would highly reccomend a custom harness. I combined several parts that were not factory so this even more made a custom harness my best option. However, it's definatly not the only way it can be done. Is it the cleanest way, I think so. For my application since I used the LS1 based 6.0 truck motor and a 6 speed out of a F-body there was never this combination from the factory so it would have required extensive modification to a stock harness. I also used a 2001 Camaro SS ECM while retaining the better truck MAF, converted to a TB that was cable operated and not throttle by wire, and I moved the ECM to under the drivers seat, etc.
Best of luck!

thanks, yea no hurry here, I started this project in 01 lol, the only thing original left is the cab, front suspension, rearend, and the control arms. everything else I've replaced/plan to replace.
I started with a 71 chyenne longbed 350, now I'm looking at a 67 shortbed LS1/Vortech/327/whatever else you wanna call it heh I just decided when I got it down to the frame back in 01, that I wasn't gonna be happy unless I built exactly what I wanted, so I'm very very slowly following that dream. This is a lot of good info indeed. If I were a great poster, or took pics worth a crap, I'd try and make a how-to on this stuff, cos I'd certainly like to see a sticky or a good article on the forum about this swap, its getting very popular to do I thnk. I mean think about it.. 285+hp easy, 14mpg, overdrive, and an engine setup to handle all elevations and weather conditions.. how can it get better than that? hehe couple that with the feasibility of a T56 bolton.. the only thing that could be better is an ls2 maybe heh, or stacy's 572 in copperhead lol, but who has $14k to dump into a project engine anyway besides TV show hosts |
