Leaky steering gear
I am working on getting my 79 4x4 back together and the steering gear has started leaking around the steering shaft and the pitman arm shaft. Is there anywhere I can get these seals? how hard are they to replace, do you have to tear the whole box apart? Thanks!

Here in Houston, I found a place that sells rebuilt steer boxes, price was
$146 and some change with a $50 core charge, was well worth the money and took about an hour to change out the whole box. Look in the yellow pages in your area for automotive and power steering components. I would advise changing out the hoses at the same time, mine started leaking shortly after I put then new box one.

I know that you can get new seals for the Pitman arm shaft from GM. I installed new ones in my truck about 6 months ago. Its comes as a set of about 2 or 3 seals, as well as all the metal washers and C-clip and everything for about $30. I think the worse part about replacing them was trying to get the old seals out. Overall, it is kind of a PITA job, but it still beats paying more $ for a new steering gear in my book. As far as the steering shaft seal, I don't know. Mine just started leaking last week, so I am hoping I can get a new seal from GM.
