I Want Posi Traction!!!
yeah that's about it, i want a posi. What's a good unit to get? Where can i get one....would rather buy a good used one due to cost, but either is fine. I have a 78 chevy 1/2 ton, originally a Big 10 but now it has a mild 350. don't know the gear ratio, but was told by PO is was 3:42. any idears?

haha! i can leave two....when it's raining...DOH!...it's not real important, but somethin i'd like to have....but only for the right price type of deal.

I have a Eaton posi with 3:73 gears in my truck and it ran about $400 for the unit.I like it beats having those one legged wonders.

12 bolt..forgot that part, i think anyway, guess i need to check gear ratios and bolt pattern...what's the easiest way to check gear ratio?

Unless you want to change the Ratio
the ratio is not that important, since you will take the ring gear from your existing differential and bolt it on the new posi differential.
For an all around posi unit, I think the Eaton posi is the best thing going. Doesn't create absolute lockup since it is clutch operated but is less noisy and has a proven reliability record. It's also rebuildable which is its advantage over the Auburn Gear differential. My Auburn has held up well, but I don't have enough HP to really hurt it. There is a lot of internet sites with info on Posi differentials. Just google it up and do some research. If current differential is open, which it sounds like it is, something like the "lock-rite" is much easier and most likely cheaper to install.

Get posi. It was the first thing I did to my truck. I went w/ Eaton kit that a regular seller had/has on Ebay, cost like 650 included posi, choice of gears(I did 3.42), bearings, seals, etc. All new.
I also had new axles installed as I was converting from 6 lug to 5. Total cost about $1250 with me pulling the rear out and putting it back. Love leaving 2 black stripes

salvage yard in nh sells original gm posi(limited slip) for $125
used ones on ebay are usaully around 150+ship |

if i were you, forget a posi, they have clutches that ware out, plus you have to put in a special aditive in your rearend grease, i would go with a detroit locker for the fact that it doesn't ware out, and no special rearend grease is needed.

I did alot of research awhile back on posi's. Easton seemed to be the best since it is rebuildable unlike the Auburns.
