weird susp. prob
I recently conv. to 77 disk using the 67 crossmember and 77 spindles, a-arms, etc. This past weekend I cut the coils some more hoping to cure my prob but still have it. It is this: the coil is seated correctly, yet is rubbing inside the pocket on the crossmember. It is sitting somewhat at an angle on both sides. I cut both equally; I seated pigtail side correctly-also the cut end in pocket dip. This is annoying-help!

If I'm reading your post right you cut 5inche off the springs?? if so that's probably your problem there's a reason why the reputable manufactures only sell 3inch max drop springs!!! cutting springs to lower a vehicle is not a good idea!!! get lowered springs and spindles in combination if you want to lower your truck safely and still have a good riding suspension

Nope, I've got 2" drop spindles. About a 5" drop overall. I used 77 springs (very soft in 25 years) and cut approx. 3" over several times (had 3" then 4" now 5"). The ride itself is great-not stiff at all (again I used 25 yr soft springs!) But, a portion of the spring still rubs in the cup of crossmember. I tried to fix by cutting more and seating it differently each time but to no avail. I don't buy new drop springs 'cause I suspect they'll do it too! I wonder if it's the crossmember. Has anyone experienced this prob before?

I removed cut spring from my 83. I have drop spindles, and the spring where cut by the previous owner. One spring was weaker than the other. The truck was leaning. So I replace the springs with ones that were not cut. As for them rubbing, I could only say do you have the spring end toward the inside of the truck where the groove starts. I put them in by undoing the back of the control arm and not by removing the spindle, so that I can make sure that it is going in straight.
I would take lowering springs over cut springs anyday. They are more stable, cut spring become weak when cut and are unstable. Just my 2 cents. ------------------

Ya, I've got the cut end in the end of groove on lower arm. One spring leans forward, one rearward(because the springs aren't symetrical.) I may try like you said and install from u-bolt side. Thanks

Brad, Did you have any luck with your suspension problem. Just wondering if you were able to fix it or not. Also if your spring is not symetrical I would not use it. All of the ones that I have seen even in the junk yards are symentrical. It sounds like those springs have had it. Maybe time for some new ones.

I haven't had a chance to tweak them. BTW, when I say symetrical, I mean springs are only coiled one way--clockwise or c-clockwise--I forgot, and lean accordingly sitting in the a-arm pocket after having been cut. If things are done right (emphasize done right!) cut springs or heated springs are safe. I've done both with success several times. However, I'm looking into buying 3-4" drop springs.

Update: I bought new 3" drop springs, installed them and no more problem. Turns out the old springs were leaning like this: ( and ). The new springs are heavier gauge making them stiffer yet softer. No more rubbing.
