Need Windshield Frame - Questions
Okay guys, first noob thread for me here.
I recently bought a '69 Blazer (my first Chevy) that needs a ton of TLC. The windshield frame is shot. Thought it would be easier to come by but apparently I was wrong. I have started posted and PMing people looking for one. Where do I tell a prospective seller to cut? Mine has pin holes most of the way down the pillars, so I need most if not all of it. I realized in my first post I neglected to mention that it is a Blazer (fixed first post already):
I know that makes things quite a bit harder for finding parts. I want to start doing work to this truck but I know the windshield frame is going to disintegrate the day I take the top off. I am located in Houston, TX. No stranger to shipping my last project truck was a Nissan and finding parts all over the country for that was par for the course. |

Is it as bad as this? I don't think you have to worry about crumbling to pieces. They stay pretty strong, I tried to demolish mine with a 10lb sledge and the metal barely moved as rusty as it was.

Yeah it looks like that inside, but even wose at the corners. The metal has bubbled out so bad that I am afraid to take it apart. Inside the door jambs there are holes all the way down the pillars.
I guess I am trying to say that this is one part I prefer not to repair so I am looking for good parts. |

I assume you are just replacing the pillars and top frame. At the base of the pillars there are reinforcing pieces welded between the pillars and cowl. This is an excellent area to splice your new frame. If your replacement frame is cut flush with the base of the windshield you will have enough pillar material to make the splice. If you are having it shipped any distance leave the pillars connected bythe windshield base. Its a pain to cut but the frame will hold its shape. I would also suggest that prior to removing your top that you take out your windshield and make a wooden template of the opening. You will need this when you try to cut your new pillars to the correct length and weld in the new frame.

That's exactly the advice I needed. I have found someone yesterday with a solid frame that asked me "where do I cut it?" so here we go.... I started a list of sheetmetal to be repaired: Windshield Frame Lower right fender cup Right Inner fender/body support Lower Kick panels (Both) Outer Rockers (Both) Lower Driver's door skin (outer) Spot behind passenger door low on tub. I don't think that list is very long, but we shall see how long it takes to do it all! Thanks for everyone's help! |
