Lookin at truck
I'm gonna be goin to look at a '79 C20 today for a possible DD for work and such. From the pics he sent me it looks pretty straight. The guy said it runs/drives great but I don't really know much about engines still to be able to say that for myself when I go to look at it. I'm hopin my bro will be able to go with me, but if not I was sorta hopin you guys could help give me some things to look for mechanical wise. He had said its got a 350/TH400 with shift kit and the rear end has floating axles.

Look at the oil on the dipstick. If it looks whitish or cloudy, there could be coolant getting in the oil. If the trans fluid smells burnt, there could be a problem there. Pull the fill cap for the rear dif to make sure the fluid is up to level, that will give some clue about how it has been maintained. Crawl under the truck from front to back, looking for dings and scrapes, indicating the level of off-roading or hard use. I also note the amount of grunge in the collant recovery bottle, possibly indicating that the collant hasn't been changed in a while.
I just went through all this when I bought an '85 K20. Even though mine needed work after I got it home, there weren't any surprizes.
