Chassis ID
Hello Everybody,
I have an interesting truck that I bought about 2 months ago. It is a 58 Apache Fleetside shortbox and the interesting part is that it sits on a chassis from 67 to maybe about 72. Perhaps some of you fellow gearheads can help in identifying the year better for me from this pic. This is a sweet truck. It has a beefed up 283 with a 400TH behide it. I am looking to put on front discs and would like to know what the difference is among those years, if any. This is a great forum and it is perfect for me as I find I am switching from the 55-59 message board to the 67-72 message board to gather all the great info. Thanks, Rick.

with out disc brakes it is a 63 to 70 frame. You can swap todisc brakes and use 71-87 stuff for parts.there is a few changes that need to be done like spindles, balljointa and tie rod ends.every ting for the conversion should be listed in FAQ.sweet lookin truck by the way.where are you from in western canada?I have the parts here for the swap if you need

Hello Dean, Thanks for the reply. I live in Kamloops, B.C. Now that spring is in the air, I am just starting to sort out the pros and cons of this truck. A previous owner has done some great stuff, but some other PO has done some stuff I've had to undo. Nothin too nasty tho. If I decide to go to discs, I would want to keep the 6 lug wheels. Rick

there are no factory 6 lug discs.that is the bad part.the good part about the swap is 73-87 front crossmembers and all the 73-87 front suspsion is bolt in.the 71-72 rear ends are bolt in and are also 5 lug.you could use the 73-87 rear ends if you weld the mounts from the older rear end and make a panard bar mount.I have the whole front crossmember from a 84 chevy if you need.i also have a 72 rear end housing too.Or for the rear pull your axles out and have them redrilled to the 5 lug pattern.I thought i seen that truck here in drayton

Hey Dean, Thanks for the info. It seems that there is much to digest, but my guess is that it would be easiest and cheapest to go with the discs in the front and leave the back drums alone. The obvious downside would be that I would end up with 5 lug wheels in the front and 6 lugs in the back. Gotta carry two spares. This looks like it'll get pricey. I was hoping for just new master cylinder w/ vacuum canister and new rotors and calipers for the front. It got complicated real fast. Hmmmm....drum brakes aren't so bad. I'll do some head scratchin and give this some thought. Thanks for the eye-opener.

ECE and some of the other vendors can sell you a set of 6-lug disc brake rotors, give them a call...

Hey Guys, thanks for the info. But at the risk of sounding like a dumbass....whats ECE? When I google it, I get a lot of crappy stuff that don't interest me. But on a separate search I did find a vendor that sells 6 lug discs and not the 5 lug ones drilled and modified, so I am in the right lane to take me where I wanna go.
