how does a 203 xfer case work?
I've got what looks like a mid 70s 3/4 ton, dana 44 front, 14 bolt FF rear, TH400 and NP203. Since it's full time four wheel drive, how does it drive on the pavement? Do they have a viscous coupling in there or something? Any advice on how to drive it (in particular?). It does have a set of Warn hubs on it, so I can certainly disengage those. Did they have manual hubs from the factory? I want to switch to a 205 someday if I can get the frame fixed and I feel like it's going to be a keeper for a while at least. Mostly this is a plow and drive to the dump, maybe to work sometimes kind of truck. Thanks very much!

they've actually got a differential similar to what is in the axles. drive it like anything else you would drive, just when you're on dry pavement keep it in HI, not HI LOC. keep your hubs locked at all times, driving with them unlocked will eat up the differential in the transfer case. it should have had drive flanges on it from the factory, but its not uncommon for people to replace them with locking hubs with the thought that they will get better milage simply by unlocking the hub, but this is not the case.
