Woo Hoo Got the Burb Running Yesterday
Got the engine in the Burb to the point yesterday where I was able to start it. I was actually really surprised that it started at all when I saw how far retarded the timing was. Once I set the timing it started and ran great.
It was a little loud because of the open headers, I actually have a funny video because of the headers, if someone has knows where I can upload it that'd be cool, it's around 500K in size. Alot of uncertainty in this, the engine came from a salvage yard, never heard it running, put in an HEI distributer, and rebuilt the Quadrajet. And now that it seems to work I can admit that I powdercoated the carb, I really thought I wrecked it because of that, so I feel quite happy it worked, although I'd never do it again. There are a few setbacks, the rad leaks, the tranny leaked (although it stopped), the driveshaft is too long and the carb idle is way too high and doesn't seem to have any adjustment. (maybe I did some damage to it??) On to the rust repair. Ron

There's a good reason you don't see too powdercoated carbs, you have to completely dismantle it to coat it. That was a disaster, broke some screws of in the shafts. I definately don't recommend doing it.

One thing I can think of on the idle is a screw on the passenger side linkage, I couldn't tell you exactly where it is or anything (it's been years since I've dealt with a quadrajet), but my 77 monte carlo wouldn't back off and it took me a long time to find it...there's some sort of an idle screw (maybe on the secondaries) that you can also adjust, maybe take a look there? Good luck...the engine looks good!

Looking at the carb again the linkage to the accelerator pump is hanging up and preventing full return of the throttle. The idle speed screw is actually not in contact with the linkage because of that.
